Lesson 2: Components of Computer Systems and Operating Systems
This week we will begin by looking at the main components of a computer system. Begin by
researching and answering the following questions about the components of a computer. The
following websites may be useful, also read the section in your textbooks 1.2 The Main Components
of Computer Systems
https://computer.howstuffworks.com/inside-computer.htm
3. There are two types of internal memory in your computer, Random Access Memory (RAM)
and Read-Only Memory (ROM).
4. Define RAM:
5. Define ROM:
6.
What is the difference between RAM and ROM?
Create a diagram of the workings of a computer, including CPU, RAM, ROM, input devices, output
devices, and backing storage. You can either use Paint to do it electronically, or draw the diagram in
your books and upload a picture of your work. Note: this should be a DIAGRAM, I am not looking for
detailed pictures of the components. Insert the picture below:
We will now have a look at different kinds of operating systems. You may be familiar with the term
‘operating system’ from using different devices. For example, you may know that your laptop uses
the Microsoft operating system, or if you have an Apple it uses the Mac operating system.
The two examples above are both examples of operating systems which use a Graphic User
Interface (GUI). There is another type of operating system called a Command Line Interface (CLI).
Research each of these types of operating systems and define them below. Make sure you write in
your own words. Read section 1.3 Operating Sytems in your textbook, and you may also find the
following website useful:

It demonstrates using a Command Line Interface to open several programs. You may wish to try
doing this for yourself, which you can do by following the instructions in the video.
Research the differences between a GUI and a CLI and compile them in the table below:
