Introduction
A few brief sentences about why the experiment is relevant or its importance.
Procedure
Apparatus pictures/sketches go here. The need to be annotated and any measurements made later
noted with appropriate variables. Describe any part as needed.
The procedure followed was the manual “PHYS227 – Lab 8 – Rotational Motion and the Moment of
Inertia, Spring 2024”. The following specifications/exceptions were noted:
Exception 1 (e.g., what was the recording frequency of the motion sensor and why did you chose
that value.)
Exception 2
Etc.
Data and Analysis
(Any calculations using equations can be
handwritten, scanned and pasted into the
appropriate locations. They must be legible!)
Record the measurements in the appropriate portions of the Excel data file.
Direct Calculation of the Moment of Inertia
Show your work for calculating the moments of inertia of the disk and plate from their masses
and size. If they do not agree with the spreadsheet values, correct the mistake. Make sure you
state the error in each measurement (may be taken from the excel sheet).

Calculation of the Moment of Inertia by Conservation of Energy
Show your work for calculating the moments of inertia of the disk and plate by using
conservation of energy. Do this algebraically and then substitute the values from one run only.
If they do not agree with the spreadsheet values, correct the mistake. Make sure you state the
error in each measurement (may be taken from the excel sheet).
Calculation of the Moment of Inertia by Applied Torque
Show your work for calculating the moments of inertia of the disk and plate from the torque
applied by the falling mass. Do this algebraically and then substitute the values from one run
only. If they do not agree with the spreadsheet values, correct the mistake. Make sure you
calculate the error for the same data run.
Comparison of the Moments of Inertia
Compare the moments of inertia quantitatively. Are they in agreement? If not, give a plausible
explanation.
Algebraic work may be handwritten and/or copied from you prelab, as long as it is correct and legible!
