5.5.2 Hard drive format

The Hard Disk Drive Format is to be done any time a 9800 system is experiencing hard drive related
failures, including:
• Hard drive fails to boot
• Hard drive boots slowly
• Data or images are mixed or lost
• Images are retrieved or saved slowly
• The hard drive experiences other problems
It should also be used prior to loading software onto the system hard drive.
Note: Brand new solid-state hard drives will have to have the format procedure executed twice. The
first execution will initialize the hard drive, while the second one will format the hard drive.
Note: Prior to formatting a customer's hard disk drive, back up any necessary data including images,
log files, calibration files, and document system configuration (this could include, but is not
limited to customer preferences, DICOM settings, etc.).

WARNING: Electrical circuits inside the equipment use voltages that are capable of causing
serious injury or death from electrical shock, or damage to the equipment. Use
appropriate precautions.

CAUTION: To prevent electrostatic discharge damage, ensure that you are properly grounded with a
grounded wrist strap before handling any electrostatic discharge electronic sensitive
components.
1. Disconnect the AC Power Cord.
2. If required, perform LOTO using the appropriate system specific LOTO procedure.
3. Connect the external keyboard and debug monitor to the Workstation.
4. Re-connect the AC Power Cord.
5. Insert the Hard Disk Drive Format Diskette into the Workstation floppy drive.

Figure 5-14 shows the location of free space information.

Figure 5-14 Hard Drive Format Verification

2. If the amount of free space is less than 2,000,000,000, return the Hard Disk Drive to GEHC
Surgery and order a replacement drive. If the amount of free space is greater than
2,000,000,000, shut the system down and remove the Hard Disk Drive Format diskette.
