Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions:
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct or
have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast
numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct.
What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost
entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in
personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is contributing to the problem of
extinction. Animals, such as Bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the
world’s ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival
and the survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in an
effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animal reserves. They then
charge admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks, and they often must also depend
on world organizations for support. This money enables them to invest in equipment and patrols to protect
the animals. Another response to the increase in animal extinction is an international boycott of products
made from endangered species. This has had some effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals from
being hunted and killed.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct word(s) for each of the blanks:
When the word "endangered" is mentioned, people usually think of particular species, like the panda or
whooping crane. However, we would like to encourage you to think about (36) _________ in a broader
context. It is (37) _______, the physical places where species live and interact with one another. Although
the development of special breeding programs, also known as captive conservation, may help some species
in some cases, it is clearly not (38) _________ answer to the global problem. Indeed, unless we are able to
protect natural areas where endangered species actually live, they have no future.
Species become endangered for a wide (39) _________ of reasons. By analyzing and grouping many
individual cases, however, we find the same broad causes appearing again and again. They are Habitat
Destruction, Exotic Species, and Overexploitation. Among other factors threatening particular species are
limited: distribution, disease, and pollution. Limited distributions are often a consequence of other threats:
populations confined to one or a few small areas (40) _________ habitat loss, for example, may be
disastrously affected by random factors. Diseases can have severe impact on species lacking natural genetic
protections against particular pathogens, like the rabies and canine distemper viruses (41) ________ are
currently devastating carnivore populations in (42) ________East Africa. Domestic animals are usually the
reservoirs of these and other diseases affecting wild populations, showing once again that human activities
lie at the root of most causes of endangerment. Pollution has seriously done harm (43) _____ number of
terrestrial species, although species living in freshwater and marine ecosystems are also suffering.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions:
Have you ever entered a tropical rainforest? It’s a special, dark place completely different from
anywhere else. A rainforest is a place where the trees grow very tall. Millions of kinds of animals,
insects, and plants live in the rainforest. It is hot and humid in a rainforest. It rains a lot in the
rainforest, but sometimes you don't know it's raining. The trees grow so closely together that rain
doesn't always reach the ground.
Rainforests make up only a small part of the Earth's surface, about six percent. They are found in
tropical parts of the world. The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon in South America. The
Amazon covers 1.2 billion acres, or almost five million square kilometers. The second largest rainforest
is in Western Africa. There are also rainforests in Central America, Southeast Asia, Northeastern
Australia, and the Pacific Islands
Rainforests provide us with many things. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is called the "lungs of our
planet" because it produces twenty percent of the world's oxygen. One fifth of the world's fresh water
is also found in the Amazon Rainforest. Furthermore, one half of the world's species of animals, plants,
and insects live in the Earth's rainforests. Eighty percent of the food we eat first grew in the rainforest.
For example, pineapples, bananas, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, chocolate, coffee, and sugar all came from
rainforests.
Twenty-five percent of the drugs we take when we are sick are made of plants that grow only in
rainforests. Some of these drugs are even used to fight and cure cancer. With all the good things we get
from rainforests, it's surprising to find that we are destroying our rainforests. In fact, 1.5 acres, or 6,000
square meters, of rainforest disappear every second. The forests are being cut down to make fields for
cows, to harvest the plants, and to clear land for farms. Along with losing countless valuable species,
the destruction of rainforests creates many problems worldwide. Destruction of rainforests results in
more pollution, less rain, and less oxygen for the world.
Question 44: What is the passage mainly about?
A. Where rainforest are located. B. Kinds of forests.
C. Facts about rainforests. D. How much oxygen rainforests make.
Question 45: According to the passage, rainforests provide human all of the following EXCEPT?

C. It helps us breathe. D. It helps circulation.
Question 47: Where would you find the largest rainforest in the world?
A. Western Africa. B. Southeast Asia.
