WATER
POLLUTION

Why did we choose the topic?
• Water pollution is a pressing concern worldwide. It affects our daily
lives, ecosystems, and future generations. By studying it, you
contribute to awareness and potential solutions.
• When it comes to developing country like India, sustainable
development is the key but Indian river say otherwise.
• River like Ganga and Yamuna come amongst dirtiest river in the
world.
• We consider rivers as mothers, but we are far behind when it comes
to protection or cleaning of rivers.
WHAT IS WATER
POLLUTION ?
Water pollution is the contamination of water sources by
substances which make the water unusable for drinking,
cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities. Pollutants
include chemicals, trash, bacteria, and parasites. All forms of
pollution eventually make their way to water.
TYPES OF WATER POLLUTION ?

GROUND SURFACE OCEAN
WATER WATER WATER
GROUND WATER
POLLUTION
Groundwater pollution can be caused by untreated INDUSTRIAL UNTREATED
waste discharge leading to diseases like skin lesions, WASTEWATER SEWAGE WATER
bloody diarrhea and dermatitis. This is more common
in locations having limited wastewater treatment
infrastructure, or where there are systematic
failures of the on-site sewage disposal system.
SOLUTIONS
• Commercial septic tanks pose an even bigger threat because they release organic
chemicals such as trichloroethane. Laws in most countries require the septic tank
to be constructed far from the water sources to prevent contamination, but at
times, this code is often violated.
• Chemicals should be disposed of with the help of a licensed hazardous waste
handler.
• As long as the landfills lack a clay liner and leachate, the chances of chemicals from
the wastes leaching and posing a threat to the groundwater are very high.
• People don’t understand is that excessive use of these chemicals can lead
to contamination of groundwater. Chemicals such as pesticides are known to
remain in the ground for years, and when diluted with rainwater, they seep deeper
into the groundwater.
• cause of pollution is mining activities, where, through precipitation, soluble
minerals can be leached from the sites into the groundwater.
OCEAN WATER POLLUTION
Ocean pollution occurs when substances used or spread by humans, such as industrial, agricultural
and residential waste, particles, noise, excess carbon dioxide or invasive organisms enter the ocean
and cause harmful effects there
SOLUTIONS
With skyrocketing plastic production, low levels of recycling, and poor waste
management, between 4 and 12 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean
each year—enough to cover every foot of coastline on the planet! And that
amount is projected to triple in the next 20 years
The best way to do this is by a) refusing any single-use plastics that you do not
need .
Tiny plastic particles, called “microbeads,” have become a growing source of
ocean plastic pollution in recent years. Microbeads are found in some face
scrubs, toothpastes, and bodywashes.
There are many non-profit organizations working to reduce and eliminate ocean
plastic pollution in a variety of different ways, including Oceanic Society, Plastic
Pollution Coalition, 5 Gyres, Algalita, Plastic Soup Foundation, and others.
• Surface water pollution is the pollution of aquatic systems
SURFACE WATER that are above ground, such as streams, lakes and rivers.
These waters become polluted when rainwater runoff carries
POLLUTION pollutants into the water. The pollutants transported by runoff
are things like salts and chemicals from city and highway roads
and nutrients and fertilizers from farms and lawns.
SOLUTIONS
• As India grows and urbanizes, its water bodies are getting toxic. It's estimated
that around 70% of surface water in India is unfit for consumption. Every day,
almost 40 million litres of wastewater enters rivers and other water
bodies with only a tiny fraction adequately treated.
• Using automated, geotagged, time-stamped, real-time sensors to gather data
in a non-stationary manner, researchers in our team at the Tata Centre for
Development at UChicago have been able to pinpoint pollution hotspots in
rivers and identify the spread of pollution locally.
• There is a possibility to use machine learning models on such high-resolution
data to predict water quality.
. Once fully developed and validated, such machine learning models could
predict values for intermediary values in time and space.
EFFECTS OF WATER
POLLUTION HEPATITIS A
ON HUMAN HEALTH
GIARDIA
Human contact with polluted water through drinking, skin
contact or even consumption of food that is grown or
prepared using polluted water poses a significant danger CHOLERA
to health. Pollutants in water may directly cause disease
or act as poisons.
AMOEBIASIS
• Here, we use a dual strategy:
intercepting plastic in rivers to cut
WATER CLEANER the inflow of pollution, and cleaning
up what has already accumulated in
ROBOT the water and won’t go away by
itself.
