LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 7 QUARTER: 2 WEEK: 2 DAY: 1

COMPETENCY Converts measurement from one unit to another in Both Metric and English systems. (M&ME-IIb-1)
&
:
OBJECTIVES
Converts one metric unit to another metric unit.

CONTENT : Conversion of Measurements (Metric System)

LEARNING Elementary Algebra by Bernabe, page 6

:
RESOURCES

PROCEDURE : A. Preparation

Recall concepts on estimating measurements

B. Motivation
Students will be given a blank metric converter and they will try to write the measurement units in the metric
converter. (Units are given by the teacher)

C. Presentation
▪ The metric system is a system of measuring things. It is used worldwide in calculations and research.

▪ Meter is the unit of measuring distances and lengths. We use this unit in our daily life, for example, the
distance between school and home, length of cloth, etc.

▪ You may have noticed that there is a weight mentioned in the bag of your favourite snack. For example, 250
grams of potato chips. Here, gram is the unit of weight.

D.Discussion/Abstraction
The table below shows the prefixes used in the metric system.

Word Symbol Meaning

kilo k 1 000 meters
hecto h 100 meters
deka da 10 meters
Base unit (meter, grams) m, g 1 meter
deci d 0.1 meter
centi c 0.01 meter
milli m 0.001 meter
To aid in converting from one unit of measure to metric another unit, a metric converter is used.

METRIC CONVERTER
km hm dam m dm cm mm

kg hg dag g dg cg mg

Example:

1. Convert 3.4325 km to m. (k to m)
Solution: Refer to the metric converter above.
km to m is 3 spaces from left to right

2. 134650.48 cm2 to m2 (cm to m)

Since it involves area, we need to double the

movement of the decimal places.

cm to m is 2 spaces from right to left, doubling

it makes 4 spaces from right to left

Note: For metric units of volume, the movements

of decimal places will be tripled.

E. Exercises

1. Convert 7m to cm
2. Convert 6.4 m2 to cm2
3. Convert 123 cm3 to m3
F. Generalization

Conversion of measurements in the Metric System in x10 of the basic unit as it goes one step
up/down of each unit in the metric converter.

G. Application

Suppose you want to bake a cake. One ingredient in the recipe must be 2500mg but your measuring
tool is in grams. How many grams will you need for that ingredient?

H. Evaluation

Convert the following:

1. 48.50 cm to m
2. 524.95 dm to cm
3. 93.89 dag to hg
I. Agreement/Assignment

Convert the following:

1. 24.5 kg to mg
2. 32.8 dag to cg
3. 17.5 cg to mg
