R117 Update

To sell tyres in ECE countries, compliance with regulations R30, R54, and R117 is required, focusing on rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise emissions. Regulation 117 has undergone several updates, with new marking requirements for existing products set for 2026 and 2028. The document emphasizes the need for testing and modifications to meet these regulations, including the acquisition of engraving machines for product updates.

Tyre regulations if sold in ECE countries

• To sell tyres in ECE countries (for example Europe) following technical

regulations need to be passed R117

Example: IRIS ECORIS 185/65R15 92H XL

• R30 (in Passenger cars = C1-class tyres)
• R54 (in C-tyres, truck tyres = C2 & C3-class tyres)
And for both above also
• R117 (Rolling resistance/Wet grip/Noise)

R30
Regulation 117 for tyres has updated

• Sets the minimum requirements and limits for tyres for

• Rolling resistance
• Sound emissions
• Wet grip
• Wet grip of worn tires (in latest version 117.04)

• Regulation 117 was first required in 2005

• Version 117.02 in 2011
• Version 117.03 in 2024
• Version 117.04 in 2024

This need to be updated to

For all Iris products! if wanted to be sold to

ECE countries/Europe

02XXXX S2WR2 -> 04XXXX S2W2R3B

Regulation 117 requirements Timing

• New product lines (For a completely new product line = new type approval)
• New R117 approval is already needed

• Existing products
• New marking is required (04XXXX S2W2R3B) for all sold tyres

• C1-tyres (passenger cars)

• 7. July 2026

• C2 & C3 tyres (C-tyres and truck tyres)

• 1. September 2028
IRIS situation

• Carmelo from Idiada told that he has informed you with a list about which tyres need to be tested to be able to
update your approvals.

• Additional inserts for e-number should be available at your facility for all products (all products have
exchangeable inserts, except few noted here below)

• We strongly suggest to purchase used/or new engraving machine to make this kind of simple modifications. Now
that you’re expanding PCR and to TBR also, it would be very useful to have such available if needed. It surely will
not be the last time modifications are needed

• We checked your situation. Unfortunately, there are also five Aures sizes that do
not have this marking in an insert. If these are wanted to be updated, sidewalls
need to be modified/shipped.
