New chameleon species may be world’s smallest reptile
Scientists have discovered (1)___ tiny new species of chameleon in a patch of
rainforest in northern Madagascar. Officially known as Brookesia nana, the new
species is about (2)___ size of (3)___ sunflower seed, fits on (4)___ tip of (5)___
finger, and may be on (6)___ Earth the smallest reptile, which is thought to survive on
a diet of mites and springtails, which it hunts down in leaf litter. Finding such a small
reptile raises questions about the lower limits of body size in vertebrates. It also
highlights (7)___ astonishing—and highly threatened—biodiversity of Madagascar.
Unfortunately, the tiny chameleon’s future is murky. The mountain forest where
the lizards are found is already severely degraded. Many people in this region cannot
afford to buy rice or meat. Poverty and growing populations have led to clearing of
rainforests to make room for agriculture and livestock; deforestation affects around 94
percent of previously forested lands, according to NASA. With a small home range
and threats to its habitat, the new chameleon species will be (8)___ shoe-in for
critically endangered status. The good news is that (9)___ Sorata massif has recently
been included in a new protected area in (10)___ Madagascar.

Why ‘star walking’ is the outdoor activity we need right now
Whether you are standing on a mountainside with the landscape’s silhouette
framing the moon or gazing out over a darkened lake with stars (1)reflecting on the
water, star walking is (2)often much more dynamic (3)than traditional stargazing. ‘An
observatory is (4)no substitute for getting out into a rural landscape under a blanket of
stars,’ says Gary Lintern who leads guided nighttime hikes in Durham, England. ‘It is
a magical experience, especially at (5)some of my favorite locations, like the High
Force Waterfall,’ England’s largest cataract, in Teesdale.
What is more, star walking is good for you. There are plenty of studies that show
the health benefits of being in nature. Spending at least two hours a week (6)outdoors,
particularly while engaging in activities that involve ‘effortless attention,’ can
decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels. (7)Moreover, walking at night
has the added benefit of improving sleep, which is important for overall health, says
Christina Parker, a behavioral sleep researcher at the University of Alabama. ‘Star
(8)walking works on two physiological processes determineing sleep quality. Exercise
and movement, (9)such as relaxing stargazing walks outside, may promote sleep by
acting on the homeostatic sleep drive,’ which influences the pressure to (10)doze.

Police: Three Filipinos cycle down St Paul’s Ruins staircase

The Public Security Police (PSP) said on Wednesday in a statement that three
Filipinos are facing charges for riding their bicycles down the staircase of the Ruins of
St Paul’s recently. According to the statement, the PSP had noticed that a resident
recently posted on social media several photos of people who ride their bicycles down
the staircase of the Ruins of St. Paul’s at night. PSP officers identified three suspects
and told them to report to a police station for questioning.
It is said that the trio are Filipino non-resident workers in their twenties. They
confirmed that they rode their bikes down the staircase. The suspects face charges of
breaching the road traffic law. The PSP urged drivers and riders to take into account
pedestrians’ safety. They should not drive any motor vehicles or ride bicycles in areas
reserved for pedestrians so that traffic accidents can be avoided. The statement
pointed out that offenders may be fined 600 patacas as violating the road traffic law.
