Paper 1: Guided textual analysis

IB English Language and Literature Paper 1 is a written exam where students analyze one or two unseen
texts. The exam focuses on analyzing the content, structure, style, and language of the text(s), requiring
students to comment on how these elements create meaning. The goal is to demonstrate understanding and
critical thinking, supported by relevant examples from the text.

IB English Language and Literature Paper 1 is marked out of 20 points. It carries a weightage of 35% towards
the final grade for both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) students.
1) Discovery Cat project
Posters In this poster analysis, I gained valuable insight into evaluating
visual texts by focusing on the distinction between foreground
and background elements. The global issue explored was the
hunting of tigers, which enhanced my understanding of how
societal concerns are conveyed through visual mediums. As this
was one of the first posters I analyzed, it significantly contributed
to shaping my analytical thinking in line with the IB framework.

2) Mowgli

In this poster analysis, I learned to critically examine the interplay

of colors, captions, and accompanying text to uncover deeper
meanings. By applying the thinking skills emphasized in the ATL
framework, I was able to engage in a more nuanced
interpretation. Additionally, the Area of Exploration (AoE)
focused on "Readers, Writers, and Texts," allowed me to connect
the visual elements to their intended audience and purpose,
further enriching my analytical approach.

Mcdonalds

1)Through analyzing this advert, I gained a deeper understanding of how small

graphic elements, such as the ants, contribute significantly to shaping the visual
narrative. These seemingly minor details add layers of meaning and context,
subtly guiding the viewer's interpretation. By closely examining the interplay of
various elements in the advert, I realized how each one works together
cohesively to reinforce and convey a unified message or theme, enhancing the
overall storytelling.

Got Milk?

2) By analyzing the "Got Milk" advert, I learned how critical the interplay
between the slogan, foreground, and background is in shaping the overall
message. The use of techniques like testimonials adds authenticity, making the
advert more persuasive. Additionally, this analysis deepened my understanding
of color theory, as I realized how color choices subtly influence emotions and
reinforce the central message of the advert, enhancing its visual appeal and
effectiveness.

Reflections
Through our study, we explored various techniques used to analyze an
advert and the crucial role the rhetorical triangle plays in this process.
The techniques, such as visual elements, slogans, and color theory, are
closely tied to the rhetorical triangle components—ethos, pathos, and
logos. Understanding this connection allows us to see how these
techniques help advertisers appeal to their audience emotionally,
logically, and credibly, offering a more comprehensive analysis of an
advert's effectiveness.

Magazine covers analysis
Through analyzing a magazine cover, I learned how to break down its
elements, such as images, typography, and layout, to understand the
visual narrative being presented. This process deepened my awareness
of how each component—like color schemes, headlines, and featured
images—can be interpreted to convey a deeper meaning or message. It
also helped me appreciate how subtle design choices in magazines
influence readers’ perceptions and enhance the overall story being
told.
Comic Strips analysis
Calvin and Hobbes

We learned how to analyze comic panels by focusing on the use of action

words, such as "BAM!" or "WHOOSH!" These words not only enhance the
intensity and motion within a scene but also influence the reader’s
emotional response. Through this analysis, I understood how action
words contribute to the dynamic flow of the story, bringing the visual
action to life and guiding the reader’s experience.

Jake likes onions

We learned how to analyze cartoons and comics by closely examining the

use of speech bubbles, panel layouts, and visual cues. This helped me
understand how dialogue and imagery work together to convey tone,
mood, and narrative progression. By focusing on these elements, I gained
insight into how comics communicate complex ideas or humor through the
combination of text and visuals, making them an impactful storytelling
medium.
Speech analysis

By analyzing this speech, I applied techniques such as identifying the

topic of relevance, rhetorical devices, anecdotes, and the use of
statistics and data. These strategies helped me uncover the deeper
meaning behind the speech, enabling a more thorough analysis.
Understanding how these elements work together provided me with
greater insight into the speaker's purpose and the overall impact of
their message on the audience.
Persepolis-Reflection
Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi offered me a unique perspective on the impact
of political and cultural turmoil in Iran through the eyes of a child. The
graphic novel combination of personal memoir and historical context allowed
me to better understand the complexities of identity, freedom, and
repression. The use of black-and-white illustrations highlighted the stark
contrasts between childhood innocence and the harsh realities of war.
Satrapi’s use of humor amidst serious themes made the narrative more
relatable. Analyzing *Persepolis* helped me appreciate how visual
storytelling can convey profound messages about resilience and human
rights.
Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories

Analyzing Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, such as The Tell-Tale Heart and
The Fall of the House of Usher, deepened my understanding of gothic
literature and psychological complexity. Poe's mastery of suspense, vivid
imagery, and unreliable narrators made his stories both eerie and
thought-provoking. His use of dark settings and themes of madness and
guilt revealed the darker sides of human nature. The symbolism and
intricate details in his writing, combined with his ability to evoke fear and
tension, showed me how mood and atmosphere can enhance a story’s
emotional impact, making his works timeless in literature.
