METHODOFDATACOLLECTION
To determine which supermarket offers the best value for your money, ten of the same products were chosen
from three different supermarkets namely: Brooklyn, Hi-Lo and Shopper's Fair. Among the items selected;
five(5) were taxable and five(5) were non-taxable. We used the price comparison approach by way of customer
questionnaires.

Questionnaires are a set of written or printed questions with a choice of answers. Firstly, questionnaires were
sent to ten(10) individuals to answer questions pertaining to the efficiency and flexibility of the supermarkets.
Secondly, another ten (10) questionnaires were made and sent out to the same (10) individuals online using a
link so they could give their opinions about each supermarket relating to the prices of goods and services
offered.. Thus ,we used price comparison to compare pricing among the three (3) supermarkets. Price
comparison is comparing the price of the same product in different outlets. The task was split among each
researchers to go to the three(3) different supermarkets and to record the price for five (5) taxable and non-
taxable items in which we all used the same products.

We then gathered all of our information both from the questionnaires and the price comparison for the
products. The information gathered was tabulated and then used to construct graphs, pie chart, histogram,
and bar graphs. The graphs, charts and illustrations were carefully studied and analyzed to draw
objective conclusions.

ANALYSISOFDATA

The data collected was an equal 50/50 split among the genders. The younger
demographic 15-25 and 26-40 were more frequent shoppers and had a greater number of
participants.

In regards to the overall ratings for the supermarkets, the majority of those surveyed rated
Shopper’s Fair the highest with ratings of 8-10 indicating that it is generally preferred.
Brooklyn Supermarket and Hilo Supermarket received varying ratings with some
individuals rating them Across all supermarkets, "Good" and "Satisfactory" ratings are
the most common, indicating that the majority of customers are generally satisfied with
the level of customer service. Shoppers Fair received the most "Good" ratings for
customer service, followed by Brooklyn Supermarket and then Hilo Supermarket.

The data also suggests that the most common frequency of shopping is "Often", followed
by "Occasionally" and "Always", while "Rarely" is the least common. This indicates that
most individuals surveyed tend to shop at supermarkets frequently, with only a few doing
so rarely.

Shoppers Fair and Brooklyn Supermarket received similar ratings for offering good value
for money, each having the highest number of ratings. Hilo Supermarket had fewer
ratings for good value for money compared to the other two supermarkets.

Something quite intriguing was discovered when the values of taxable and non-taxable
commodities were compared. It was discovered that shoppers' fare for most areas was the
11
best supermarket to shop overall for taxable goods. Compared to the other stores, one
might save at least one hundred (100) Jamaican dollars by buying four (4) items.
Conversely, the information showed that Brooklyn Super was the top supermarket to
purchase non-taxable items from. Customers could purchase six non-taxable things there
for at least eight hundred (800) Jamaican dollars less than they would have with the other.

12
DISCUSSIONOFFINDINGS

Shopper’s Fair Supermarket emerged as the preferred choice among the surveyed
individuals, with the majority giving it high overall ratings (8-10). This suggests that
Shopper’s Fair Supermarket likely excels in various aspects such as product quality,
variety, and overall shopping experience.

The following factors contributed to Shopper’s Fair Supermarket’s success based on the
data received:

1. Value for Money: It received high ratings for offering good value for money. This
indicates that customers perceive the prices at Hilo Supermarket to be reasonable in
comparison to the quality of products and services provided and one could save
more when purchasing taxable goods.
2. Customer Service: Despite some variability, Shopper’s Fair Supermarket received
positive ratings for customer service. This suggests that the staff at the supermarket
are generally attentive and helpful, contributing to a positive shopping experience.
3. Consistency: The consistently high ratings for Shopper ’s Fair Supermarket across
different age groups and genders suggest that it appeals to a broad range of
customers.

While Hilo Supermarket received moderate overall ratings, it lagged behind in certain
areas such as customer service and value for money. Hilo Supermarket received the most
"Poor" ratings for customer service, indicating potential issues with staff behavior or
responsiveness. With fewer ratings for good value for money compared to the other
supermarkets, Hilo Supermarket might need to reassess its pricing strategies or product
offerings to align better with customer expectations.

Brooklyn Supermarket received mixed ratings across various categories, suggesting that
customers' experiences vary. However, it consistently performed well in terms of
customer service, receiving the most "Good" ratings among the supermarkets. This
indicates that Brooklyn Supermarket might have a strong focus on providing excellent

13
service to its customers. Brooklyn also received positive ratings for value for money,
suggesting that it remains competitive in this aspect.

The data indicates that the majority of respondents shop at supermarkets frequently, with
"Often" being the most common frequency. This suggests that supermarkets play a
significant role in fulfilling consumers' regular shopping needs. This trend underscores
the importance of maintaining consistent quality, service, and value offerings to retain
loyal customers and attract new ones.

In terms of value for money, shoppers fair emerged the top supermarket to shop when
purchasing items which are taxed. Contrarily, Brooklyn supermarket was the top
supermarket to shop for the non- taxables. Hi-Lo supermarkets based on the data would
be the worst place to shop for taxable and non-taxable items.

CONCLUSION
Overall, Shoppers Fair Supermarket is the preferred supermarket of choice for most individuals
surveyed, with high ratings for both overall experience, goods and services and value for
money. Brooklyn Supermarket also performs well, particularly in terms of customer service and
value for money as customers could save a lot on non-table goods. Hilo Supermarket, while still
popular among some, received lower ratings in certain aspects, such as customer service and
value for money. It is therefore our recommendation that the regulatory bodies charged with
ensuring the pricing of items are done in an equitable manner, conduct a more robust effort to
ensure that consumers affairs are met. Suggesting areas for improvement. Supermarkets need
to pay close attention to these factors to remain competitive and meet the evolving needs
and expectations of their customers.
