Inspection of Aircraft Structure Made of Non-Porous Materials - PT
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE SOLVENTS/CLEANING AGENTS, SEALANTS AND OTHE
R MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND THE L
OCAL REGULATIONS. MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A GOOD FLOW OF AIR THROUGH
THE WORK AREA. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES. DO NOT SMOKE. DO NOT USE THE
SE MATERIALS NEAR A FLAME, SPARKS OR SOURCES OF HEAT. USE PROTECTIVE C
LOTHING, GOGGLES AND GLOVES. IF YOU GET ONE OF THESE MATERIALS ON YOU
R SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES, FLUSH IT AWAY WITH A FLOW OF CLEAN WATER. IF YO
U GET ONE OF THESE MATERIALS IN YOUR MOUTH, GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL AI
D. IN GENERAL, THESE MATERIALS ARE POISONOUS, FLAMMABLE AND SKIN IRRI
TANTS.
WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE A BLACK LIGHT SOURCE IF IT DOES NOT HAVE A FILTER OR TH
E FILTER DOES NOT HAVE THE CORRECT FIT OR THE FILTER HAS A CRACK. ULTRA
VIOLET RADIATION THAT IS NOT FILTERED CAN CAUSE INJURY TO YOUR EYES A
ND SKIN.

(3) Make sure that the access to the inspection area is clear.
(4) Make sure that the paint coating is removed from the inspection area (Refer to SRM 5
1-75-11).
(6) Make sure that the surface of the inspection area is clean, smooth, dry and free from
all types of contamination that might mask a possible defect, produce false or irreleva
nt indications, or interfere in the inspection process.
(7) Do a check of the inspection area for visual damage or discontinuities. White light >1
100 lx at inspection surface.
(8) The recorded radiation intensity of the UV-A lamp must not be less than the minimum
value of 1200 µW/cm² or greater than 5000 µW/cm² measured at 38 cm (14.960 in).
(9) The recorded white light level at the inspection surface with the UV-A lamp switched o
n must be less than 20 lx. The area can be darkened to get this white light level.
CAUTION: BEFORE YOU DO THE INSPECTION, MAKE SURE THAT THE INTENSITY
OF THE BACKGROUND WHITE LIGHT IS IN THE APPROVED LIMITS. IF
YOU CANNOT DECREASE THE BACKGROUND WHITE LIGHT TO THE APP
ROVED LIMITS, THE INSPECTION WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE.
(10) A system performance check must be done using either ISO EN 3452-3 type 1 or typ
e 2 panel or equivalent (PSM/TAM, known defective sample). With the result compara
ble to the established baseline result made using fresh materials processed with the s
ame materials designations as the method used.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU APPLY SUFFICENT PENETRANT TO COVER THE AREA
OF INSPECTION. KEEP THE SURFACE WET WITH PENETRANT AND DO NOT A
LLOW TO DRY OUT DURING THE DWELL TIME. IF THE PENETRANT WILL DRY
OUT YOU HAVE TO APPLY ADDITIONAL PENETRANT.
