LEARNING EPISODE 2
Episode Title: Embedding Action Research for Reflective Teaching
Desired Learning Outcome:
1. Be familiar about action research as a reflective teacher .
2. Underscore the importance of doing action research.
INTRODUCTION
As an educator or teacher we must be an action researcher. This episode
emphasizes the importance of doing research as major part of being a teacher.
Because we must be interested to improve ourselves by knowing the how our
students learn, be initiative in innovating the curriculum and basically yearn to
advance our teaching practice. With this, every teacher needs to do an action
research to every practical problem. These challenges and observed inconsistencies
arise between what is planned and what actually takes place in the actual
classroom.

ACTION : taking action to improve practice
RESEARCH: findings things out and coming to a new understanding that create new
knowledge.
It all started in 1920 when John Dewey introduced the idea of inquiry. Followed by
Collier, 1945; Lewin 1949; and Corey, 1953. Action research is a habit of continuing
inquiry as introduced by Schon. Inquiry starts with situations that are problematic,
puzzling, uncertain and inconsistent so does, an Action Research.According to
Stephen Corey in 1953 Action Research is the process through which practitioners
like teachers, study their own practice to solve their personal or professional
practical problems. Followed by John Elliot in 1993 explained that action research is
concerned with everyday practical problems experience by teachers, instead of
theoretical problems described by pure investigators.
Action Research (AR) was also regarded Teacher Action Research (TAR)
because it founded on the reality of the school, classroom, teachers and students. It
is a process that compels teacher to study their surrounding and overall academic
setting to fully understand and improve the quality of education. Unending practice
of observation, reflection and inquiry lead to action enhancing teaching and
learning process. It connects the doing (practice) and learning (study) and reflection
(inquiry).

REFLECT
Based on the readings you made and the previous activities that you have
done,
1. What important ideas or concepts have you learned about action research?
I learned that action research is a process of identifying a problem in the classroom or school
environment, implementing an intervention or strategy to address the problem, and then
evaluating the effectiveness of that intervention. It is a reflective and systematic approach
that allows teachers to improve their teaching practices based on real data and observations.
2. Have you realized that there is a need to be an action researcher as a future

teacher?Yes, I have realized that there is a need to be an action researcher as a future
teacher. It allows educators to continuously improve their teaching methods, address
challenges in the classroom, and contribute to the development of effective educational
practices
I realized that being an action researcher as a future teacher is essential because it enables me
to critically assess my teaching practices, make informed decisions to improve student learning,
and contribute to the overall improvement of education by addressing real classroom challenges.
WRITE ACTION RESEARCH PROMPTS
A. From what teaching principles of theories can this problem be anchored?
I have observed and noticed that Action Researched begins with a
problem or a problematic situation.
Write an example of a problematic situation that you have observed and noticed?
I have observed is students struggling with maintaining focus and engagement during online
classes. Despite the availability of digital resources, many students appear distracted, and their
participation in lessons is low, which affects their learning outcomes. This issue can be anchored
in teaching principles like constructiveness theory, which emphasizes active student engagement
in the learning process, and behaviorism, which focuses on reinforcement and motivation to
encourage active participation
B. What have I realized? What do I hope to achieve?
I realized that for every teaching learning problem, there is a solution.
Write a probable solution to the problematic situation of students struggling with focus and
engagement during online classes could be incorporating interactive activities and real-time
assessments, such as quizzes, polls, or group discussions, to maintain student attention.
Additionally, using multimedia resources like videos or interactive simulations can make the
lessons more engaging. Setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and offering
incentives for participation could also motivate students to stay focused.
C. What strategies, activities, and innovations can I employ to improve the
situation or solve the problem? To improve the situation, I can employ strategies
such as using interactive tools like quizzes and polls, integrating gamification to motivate
students, conducting breakout sessions for group discussions, incorporating multimedia
resources to make lessons dynamic, and providing real-time feedback to keep students
engaged and focused during online classes.
As a future action researcher I can plan for an appropriate intervention like
I can plan for an appropriate intervention like introducing a blended learning approach that
combines online lessons with interactive in-class activities, using technology to increase
student engagement, and incorporating regular feedback sessions to track progress and adjust
teaching strategies accordingly.

D. If I conduct or implement my plan, what can be its title?
