Assignment 1

The document outlines an assignment for a course on structural analysis, requiring calculations related to the impact of a sliding collar on a vertical rod, including maximum displacement, tensile stress, and impact factor. It also includes a problem involving a simply supported beam under an inclined load, necessitating stress calculations at the beam's corners. Additionally, the assignment asks for the determination of the shear center position for a specified channel section.

23-201-403 ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES-I

Assignment 1
Date of Submission: 24/02/2025
1) A sliding collar of weight W = 600 N falls from a height h = 50 mm onto a flange at
the bottom of a slender vertical rod (see figure). The rod has length L = 1.2 m, cross-
sectional area A = 480 mm2, and modulus of elasticity E = 205 GPa. Calculate the
following quantities:
(a) the maximum downward displacement of the flange
(b) the maximum tensile stress in the rod and
(c) the impact factor.

2) Solve the preceding problem if the collar has mass M = 80 kg, the height h = 0.5 m, the
length L = 3.0 m, the cross-sectional area A = 350 mm2, and the modulus of elasticity
E = 170 GPa.
3) A simply supported 100 mm wide and 120 mm deep horizontal beam is 5 m long. It
carries a load of 12 kN at the midspan. The load lies in a plane inclined at 30° to the
vertical longitudinal plane. The load line passes through the centroid of the rectangular
section of the beam. Calculate the stresses at all the corners of the section. Show the
variation of stresses in the section on a diagram.
4) Determine the position of shear center for a channel section of 60 mm× 60 mm outside
and of 5 mm thickness.
