CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter contains the introduction, the statement of the problem,

significance of the study, conceptual framework, theoretical frameworks,

hypothesis, scope and delimitation of the study, and definition of terms.

Introduction

Education is widely recognized as an important step of personal and

societal progress. However, the pursuit of academic excellence is often hold

back by socioeconomic disparities, particularly financial instability. This

challenge affects students during pivotal academic stages, such as Senior

High School students, where the pressure to succeed academically intersects

with the financial realities of their families. The impact extends beyond

material resources; financial limitations restrict participation in

extracurricular activities and enrichment programs that can significantly

enhance academic performance. The researchers aim to classify and

investigate the varied impact of financial instability on the academic

performance of Senior High School Students at Datamex College of Saint

Adeline, their coping strategies and broader implications for their academic

and personal development.

Brew et al. (2021) research reveals that factors beyond classroom

instruction significantly influence senior high school academic

performance. These include attendance, parental socioeconomic status,

resource access, nutrition, and teacher quality. Maureen et al.'s (2019) study

on the negative impact of financial instability on college students is highly

relevant. The financial stressors—anxiety, reduced study time due to work,

decreased learning commitment, and lack of savings—equally affect senior

high schoolers. Many juggle jobs and studies, lacking resources to handle

unexpected expenses. Applying this to Datamex College of Saint Adeline,

we see that financial instability among senior high school students likely

negatively impacts their academic performance. Students facing financial

hardship may experience increased stress, reduced study time, and

decreased engagement in learning, mirroring the findings of Maureen et al.

(2019). Addressing this requires a holistic approach, supporting students

with financial aid, resource provision, and possibly mentoring programs to

mitigate the negative effects of financial instability and improve academic

outcomes.

A recent study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies

(2022) financial constraints are a major barrier to Technical and Vocational

Education and Training (TVET) for Filipino youth, mirroring the impact of

financial instability on senior high school students' academic performance,

as shown in a 2022 PIDS study where 48% of NEET youth cited lack of

funds as the primary reason for not pursuing TVET. According to Mendez

(2015) low financial literacy among Filipinos, ranking near the bottom in

ASEAN, as also stated by Pagaduan (2020), significantly impacts financial

attitudes and habits, as demonstrated by a study of Baliuag University

business students showing a strong correlation between moderate financial

literacy and positive financial attitudes. This underscores the need for

increased financial literacy education in schools.

The goal of this study is to analyze the financial instability affecting

senior high school students at Datamex Saint Adeline College. This

investigation will explore the relationship between financial limitations and

various academic factors, including student motivation, access to

educational resources, and overall academic performance. The study aims

to understand how these financial challenges influence educational

outcomes and the degree of inclusivity within the school environment.

Ultimately, the objective is to identify strategies and interventions that can

help improve the academic performance of students who are facing financial

instability.

This study aims to examine and identify how financial stress affects

students' motivation, attendance, access to resources, and overall academic

performance. The research seeks to highlight the challenges faced by

students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, and provide

insights that can guide strategies to support them. By addressing these

issues, the study aims to promote a more equitable and supportive

educational environment.

3. Is there a significant relationship between financial instability and the

academic performance of Senior High School students?

4. What recommendation can be derived from the insights gained from the

findings of the study?

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework

The input frame consists of several key components: the demographic profile

of respondents, their level of academic skills, and factors that affect their academic

performance.
Datamex College of Saint Adeline Inc.

The research process involves gathering data through a structured survey

questionnaire. Researchers will distribute the questionnaire using both paper-based

and online Google Forms to ensure accessibility and wider participation.

The output of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the impact of financial

instability on the academic performance of senior high school students at Datamex

College of Saint Adeline. This research will provide insights into how financial

challenges affect overall academic performance of students.

Theoretical Framework

The concept of socioeconomic status (SES) and the achievement gap

further enriches our understanding. Financial instability is often strongly

correlated with lower SES, creating systemic barriers to educational success.

Students from financially unstable homes may lack access to crucial resources

like adequate nutrition, reliable internet access, or enriching extracurricular

activities, all of which contribute to academic disparities. This framework

emphasizes the need to address systemic inequalities to ensure equitable

educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their financial

circumstances.
Datamex College of Saint Adeline Inc.

The socioeconomic status (SES) framework illuminates the connection

between financial instability and academic underperformance. Financial instability

frequently correlates with lower SES, resulting in unequal access to vital resources

like nutritious food, reliable internet, and enriching extracurricular activities. This

resource gap contributes to the achievement gap, disproportionately affecting

students from financially unstable homes who may struggle with concentration,

online learning, and holistic development. Addressing this requires implementing

strategies that promote equity, such as providing financial aid, ensuring resource

accessibility for all students, and developing targeted support programs to help

students overcome the academic challenges stemming from their financial

circumstances.

Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant relationship to the financial instability and

academic performance of Senior High School Students at Datamex College

of Saint Adeline.
