Adding Value to

Waste Water Sludge

Reliability through Experience

History
It all started in 1946: technology and plants
Very much focused on the fats and oils business

In 1990: the De Smet Group creates a subsidiary to

deliver turn key projects: : De Smet Engineers &
Contractors (« DSEC »)

More than 40 major successful projects to date

In 2004 the De Smet Group splits into two entities

- Desmet Ballestra: specializing in oil mill process
- De Smet Engineers & Contractors: oil, sugar, biofuels
(biodiesel, bioethanol) on turnkey basis

In 2006 DSEC creates a “Environment and Energy”

• Municipal sludge
• Industrial sludge
• Organic residues (manure, droppings, ..)
• Anaerobic digestate

Several Outlets

• Agricultural use (spreading - compost - fertilizer)

down (health standards are increasing ...)
• Thermal valorization
• Landfill

Sludge drying is a prerequisite to most outlets

Why Drying ?

Drying in view of the end-use of the sludge

• Reduced Volumes: reduced costs of transport and
storage
• Stabilization/Hygiene: transforming waste into a
pathogens-free product
• Maintaining fertilizing added value in agriculture
content:
• Reducing fermentation: VOC and odor reduction
• Autothermal: Energy valorization

THE MAIN TECHNOLOGY OF DRYING WE OFFER
IS AN INDIRECT DRIER TO ANSWER ALL
YOUR REQUIREMENTS

• The discs drier allows the pre-drying before

introduction into a combustion unit and thus
reach self-thermicity

• It is also suitable for drying of digestate from

anaerobic digestion and has the same
advantages as for the sludge drying: cleaning,
volume reduction, etc.…

• Finally it ensures the complete drying of primary

sludge, digested and undigested up to 90% with
an evaporation capacity of more than 4.5 unit

Principle of Operation

The rotor consists of a stack of disks on a heated horizontal tube. The

heating fluid (steam or oil) circulates inside the discs; the product to be
dried flows outside the discs.
Exchange coefficient with steam is 7kg water/ m².hr. The use of thermal oil
reduces the surface by about 1/3.

Avantages of the Discs Dryer

Efficiency
Large heating surface in a limited volume
High evaporation rate
Thermal efficiency: intense contact between discs
and products to be dried

Security
Indirect system: no contact between the heating media and the
product to be dried
Very low O2
Control of temperature, CO and CO2
Injection of inert gas or steam

Avantages of the Discs Dryer

Flexibility
Choice of final product structure: powder or granules
Use in pre-drying or drying: dry matter from 32 to 95%

Economic
Automated installation requiring minimum staff
Very low maintenance costs
