Sem III- Environmental Issues and Challenges


(3 credit course)
Course Outcomcs:
On successful completion of this coursc students will be:
1. Ablc to valuc nature and its multiple components, and appreciate nature as a
dynamic
system with interdepcndent componcnts
2. Able to understand thc impacts of ongoing cconomic model, lifesty le and personal
choices on the cnvironment
3. Able to contribute as informed citizens to public discourses on Common
environmental issucs.
Unit I: Introduction to cnvironmental studies

Mcanings of environment, multiple ways of sccing it, multiple ways of diagnosing the
'environmental problem' and hence different solution
Evolution of the concept
Scope of sustainable development and sustainable consumption.
Unit II: Ecosystems

Concept and types of ccosystems, their functions (ccosystem services) and


interdepcndence especially in Indian context.
National and international policics, trcaties and politics of ccosystems management
including Payment for Ecosystem services, Millennium Ecosystem Services,
Conventionof Biological Diversity, CITES, Ramsar Convention ctc.
Social and economic importance of various ecosystems for spccific socio-cconomic
groups; top-down and bottom-up conservation policics; and how these impact on
cquity across class, caste and other social hicrarchics with reference to different
ccosystems like forests, grasslands and wet lands.
Unit III: Biodiversity Conservation

Concept of biodivcrsity, biodiversity resources of India (biodiversity hotspots), and


endangered and endemic specics.
Thrcats to biodivcrsity from habitat loss, poaching, and unsustainable
lifestyle/consumerism.
Human-wildlife conflict, State-led conservation, community driven conscrvation,
restoration ecology, international and national laws, policies and Institutions of
Conservation.

Course outcome

1. To focus on the systcmatic analysis of issues relatcd to public policy and the decision
processcs associated with them.
2. Tounderstand andenables students to address contemporary political, cconomic and
social issucs in a cohcrent and comprchensive manner.
3. To promote familiarity with the substantive character of, and problems in the
implementation of spccific arcas of public policy.
4. The main objective of the programme is to impart the students the important skills
like quantitative and qualitativc analytical skills, rcceive an cxposure to the real world
policy naking proccss, and cnhancc their managerial skills and cnduring commitment
to the public servicc values of serving the public interest with accountability and
transparency.
5. To cncourage studcnts to acquire knowledge, skills and capabilities arising from the
nccd to find solutions to the developmental problems, to defend democratic values,
and to resist authoritarian impulses to 'catch up' with or mimic less democratic
countrics.
