Assignment-10

The document outlines various thermodynamics problems involving the melting of iron, atomization of water, work done in a piston-cylinder system, and the operation of a centrifugal air compressor and an adiabatic turbine. It includes calculations for energy transfer, efficiency, and work output in different thermodynamic processes. Additionally, it discusses the performance of a heat engine and refrigerator system operating between specified temperature reservoirs.

Assignment I: Thermodynamics (ME202)

1. It is required to melt 5 tonnes/h of iron from a charge at 15° C to molten metal at 1650° C and the latent heat
is 270 kJ/kg. The specific heat in solid state is 1535° C and the latent heat is 270 kJ/kg. The specific heat in
solid state is 0.502 and in liquid state (29.93/atomic weight) kJ/kg K. If an electric furnace has 70 percent
efficiency, find the kW rating needed. If the density in molten state is 6900 kg/m3 and the bath volume is
three times the hourly melting rate, find the dimensions of the cylindrical furnace if the length to diameter
ratio is 2. The atomic weight of iron is 56.
2. A cooling tower nozzle disperses water into a stream of droplets. If the average diameter of the droplets is 60
microns, estimate the work required for atomizing 1 kg of water isothermally at the ambient conditions.
Given: surface tension of water in contact with air = 0.07 N/m, density of water = 1000 kg/m3. Water is
assumed to enter the nozzle through a pipe of 15 mm diameter.
3. A cylinder containing the air comprises the system. Cycle is completed as follows.
(a) 82000 Nm work is done by the piston on the air during compression stroke and 45 kJ of heat are rejected
to the surroundings.
(b) During the expansion stroke 100000 Nm of work is done by the air on the piston. Calculate the quantity
of heat added to the system.

4. A piston and cylinder machine contains a fluid system which passes through a complete cycle of four processes. During
a cycle, the sum of all heat transfers is -170 KJ. The system completes 100 cycles per minute. Complete the following
table showing the method for each item, and compute the net rate work output in kW.

Process Q (kJ/min) W (kJ/min) ΔE (kJ/min)

a-b 0 2170 -
b-c 21000 0 -
c-d -2100 - -36600
d-a - - -

5. A system receives 200 kJ of heat at constant volume and rejects 220 kJ of heat at constant pressure during
which 40 kJ of work is done on the system. The system is brought back to its original state by an adiabatic
process. Calculate the adiabatic work. If the initial internal energy is 240 kJ, then calculate the value of internal energy
at all states.
6. A centrifugal air compressor delivers 18 kg of air per minute. The inlet and outlet conditons of air are
velocity 5 m/sec and 7.5 m/sec, pressure 100 kPa and 700 kPa, specific volume 0.5 m3/kg and 0.15 m3/kg
respectively. The increase in enthalpy of air passing through the compressor is 165 kJ/kg and heat loss to the
cooling water surrounding air is 754 kJ/min. Find the HP of the motor required to drive the compressor and
ratio of inlet pipe to the outlet pipe diameter. Inlet and discharge lines are the same level.
7. Argon gas enters steadily an adiabatic turbine at 900 kPa and 450°C with a velocity of 80 m/s and leaves at
150 kPa with a velocity of 150 m/s. The inlet area of the turbine is 50 cm2. If the power output of the turbine
is 250 kW, determine the exit temperature of the argon. For argon take R= 0.2081 kJ/Kg K and Cp = 0.5203
kJ/kg K.
8. A direct heat engine operating between two reservoirs at 327° C and 27° C drives a refrigerator operating
between 27° C and 13° C. The efficiency of the heat engine and the COP of the refrigerator are each 70% of
their maximum values. The heat transferred to the direct heat engine is 500 kJ. The net heat rejected by the
engine and the refrigerator to the reservoir at 27° C is 400 kJ. Find the net work output of the engine –
refrigeration combination. Draw the schematic representation.
