Abstract
This study investigates the impact and effectiveness of dress code policies
on students at Tagoloan Community College, Misamis Oriental. Employing
a quantitative research design, the study seeks to analyze students’
perceptions of the dress code, its influence on behavior, academic
performance, and overall student engagement. Data was gathered through
structured surveys administered to a sample of students, with a focus on
their attitudes towards compliance, the perceived relevance of the dress
code, and any behavioral changes linked to its enforcement. The findings
aim to provide insights into how dress code policies contribute to the
college’s academic environment and student discipline. Results indicate
varying degrees of acceptance and disagreement among students, with
implications for policy adjustments. The study also explores the balance
between institutional standards and individual expression.

Introduction
Dress codes is one of the policies Tagoloan Community College has, and it is important
to every student to follow the policies of their institution to show reverence and good conduct.
The policies of dress codes helps students to let other people identify them as a student from
Tagoloan Community College.
Dress codes has a great importance in our life, because it can help individual to feel the
belongingness in our society especially in school. According to Penharkar, (2022), Clothing
plays an essential role in creating a person’s personality. This statement says the importance of
dress codes by making other people’s perspective to become inclusive by understanding the good
impact of following the policies of their institutions.
Implementing dress codes ultimately results in inconsistent practices and violations of
students’ rights. School dress codes have been adopted as a means of controlling student
behavior without fully exploring the relationship between curriculum and virtue. (Gretchen,
2020)
According to Yeban, J.D (2023), School boards are generally allowed to create and
enforce dress codes program. And that’s why Tagoloan Community College has its own
regulations about the way to wear. Wearing uniform is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a
school and is an important part of being a school student.
School uniforms are a key way of developing a sense of togetherness among students
and staff, and by allowing student to choose their own uniforms, schools are sending a message
that choose their diversity and respect the individual choices of their students. (Anglia, 2023).
Nowadays, financial is one of the problem a college students’ facing, but on behalf of the
policies the school has, students should buy uniforms to wear every Monday to Thursday and to
wear their proper civilian outfit every Friday and Saturday. According to Bittker, (2022) It also
aims to facilitate an understanding of the challenges faced by some groups throughout our
history and create a safer, more accepting school environment.
According to Tuli, (2021) Expression is a valuable part of growing up and freedom to do
so should be available to all children. Student from Tagoloan Community College tries to
understand their school policies for them to realize the value of growing up and having freedom
to pursue their dreams in life by wearing the dress codes of their institution.
Establishing a dress code at school promotes a more positive environment of education.
Students can walk with confidence, and smile with their faces, seeing their beautiful self wearing
the uniform from their institution. According to Carey, (2023) Dress codes are typically
implemented by school districts and employers to promote learning, safety, and image.
According to Penharkar, (2022). If we spend part of our day telling students, you don’t
look the right way. You’re not dressed the right way; you could be unsafe because you have a hat
or a hood on kids aren’t going to feel loved supported a sense of belonging.
A person’s appearance is frequently used to appraise them in life situations. Unless there
is a specified dress code policy that permits you to wear casually on a particular day, teachers
should dress for success every day of the week. Inappropriate attire can affect how the teacher is
viewed by parents, students, administrators, and other educators. (etools4education, 2024).
Teachers can earn the respect necessary to provide a good example for their children by
dressing for success. Consider the impression you are giving your students if you disregard the
district’s stated dress code. For a variety of reasons, students frequently fiercely disagree with
their clothing code. For instance, a lot of students believe they need to be allowed to wear hats to
class. It’s crucial to keep in mind that kids excel at imitating the actions they see in adults.
(etools4education, 2024).
According to Michele, (2022). Three primary discursive effects were identified:
“Invisibilizing” informs dietetics students/interns how to be professional and modest.
“Protecting” highlights dress to promote health and safety. Educational institutions try to help
their interns and students come prepared with the skills necessary for their position while gaining
a feeling of confidence and credibility among professional contacts with dress codes.
Students often been harassed while walking in the streets. According to Bianca, (2022).
Street harassment was commonly encountered by participants while they were in their school
uniform, and beginning high school was often associated with the onset or increased intensity of
street harassment. That’s why schools should create a supportive climate that allows students to
negotiate their commutes without fear of harassment by developing norms that encourage
uniformity but also take into account the possible hazards connected with particular clothes.
One of the main reasons why dress codes are a good idea for schools is that they promote
a sense of professionalism. When students dress appropriately for school, they are presenting
themselves in a manner that is respectful and dignified. This can have a positive impact on their
behavior and attitudes, as they are more likely to take their studies seriously and behave in a
responsible manner. According to Harris, (2023) dress codes are a good idea for schools, as they
create a more professional and respectful environment for learning.
Additionally, dress codes aid in lessening the social and economic divide among students.
There may be a sense of inequality among pupils if they are permitted to wear pricey or designer
clothes to class. Bullying and other undesirable behaviors may result from this, which could
harm the educational setting. Schools can lessen social and economic inequalities by enforcing a
dress code that ensures all pupils are dressed similarly.
The purpose of a school-wide dress code is to establish a school environment that
supports a productive academic atmosphere, which supports students’ learning and reflects the
educational values of the staff and the parents. (Ranch, 2024). Love them or hate them, dress
codes must be observed, and they really do matter. (Bryant, 2023).
Methods
This study employed a quantitative research design to examine the impact of dress code
policies on students at Tagoloan Community College. The study utilized a descriptive survey to
gather numerical data regarding students’ perceptions, experiences, and attitudes toward the
college’s dress code policies. The participants in this study were students currently enrolled at
Tagoloan Community College. A convenience sampling method was employed, and participants
were invited to voluntarily complete an online survey. The sample included a total of 25 number
of students, with a demographic breakdown of 60% female and 40% male. Only students who
consented to participate in the survey were included in the study. The survey was distributed to
students via Facebook and Messenger.
The primary tool for data collection was an online self-administered questionnaire
designed to gather quantitative data on students’ perceptions and attitudes toward the dress code
policy at Tagoloan Community College. The questionnaire consisted of 15 items. The survey
used Likert-type scale items (e.g., strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree) to
quantify responses, allowing for statistical analysis of the data.
This study adhered to ethical guidelines by ensuring that participation was voluntary and
that all responses were anonymous. Informed consent was obtained from all participants, and the
confidentiality of the data was maintained throughout the study.
Results and Discussions
Demographic Profile. The researchers gathered a total of 25 respondents of students in
Tagoloan Community College. 28% in total of seven 19 years old respondent, 40% in ten 20
years old respondents, 16% in four 21 years old respondents, 4% in one 22 years old, 23 years
old, 25 years old and 43 years old. Also, the researchers gathered a total of 25 respondents, 60%
are female and 40% are male.
Tagoloan Community College students were pleased with the current uniform
alternatives, which are consistent with the institution’s inclusive dress code principles,
encouraging respect and accepting of multiple gender identities and providing an environment in
which individuals feel appreciated. According to Anglia (2023), school uniforms encourage
togetherness and inclusivity, fostering a sense of belonging among students and staff. This
acceptance emphasizes the necessity of institutional practices that respect personal identity while
upholding the values of equality and diversity, ensuring that all students feel supported and
represented in the educational environment.
Despite Tagoloan Community College’s inclusive policy, some students still feel slight
bias based on gender identity, emphasizing the need for further progress. This is consistent with
Hartnett’s (2022) observation that traditional dress standards could strengthen negative gender
norms, significantly impacting non-binary and transgender learners. Such examples highlight the
significance of constantly improving dress code standards in order to eliminate biases and
promote true equality. Tagoloan Community College has the potential to become a model of
inclusivity by addressing these difficulties, ensuring that all students feel safe, respected, and
appreciated at the institution.
Students at Tagoloan Community College reported feeling at ease with the present dress
code, particularly on designated formal clothing days, indicating that the policies effectively
balance structure with flexibility. However, certain difficulties arise from the requirement to stick
strictly to schedules, which may cause inconvenience for some learners. ProCon Organization.
(2023) emphasizes that uniforms have a role in improving safety and discipline while
incorporating flexibility, as stated by DepEd Order No. 065, s. 2010 (2020) could help to foster
diversity by reducing financial and logistical costs on families, making the dress code more
accommodating for all.
Students at Tagoloan Community College advocate for an active role in developing
uniform policies that reflect diversity and modern standards. While uniforms are acknowledged
as beneficial in discipline and motivation, as mentioned by the Education Endowment
Foundation (2024), their design and implementation must also encourage diversity and
individuality. By involving students in the policy review process, the institution may increase
their feeling of ownership and ensure that policies reflect the changing needs and beliefs of the
student population, producing a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Tagoloan Community College’s uniform policy has successfully promoted a sense of
belonging by treating both genders equally, resulting in an inclusive environment that recognizes
and respects students’ identities while encouraging equality. This approach has been well
received by students, who feel supported and valued at the university. Peetz (2024) emphasizes
the significance of fostering belonging in educational environments, stressing how inclusive
approaches improve student well-being, engagement, and overall academic and social
experiences.
While many Tagoloan Community College students are aware of the dress code, some are
unclear about specific elements, indicating a need for better interaction and the distribution of
information. This gap provides chances to raise awareness through creative strategies such as
digital updates, interactive platforms, and consistent forums, ensuring that all students are well-
informed. Gosselin (2022) emphasizes the importance of transparent dress code standards in
resolving gaps and increasing compliance, emphasizing the need for proactive actions to make
policies clearer and more accessible to the entire student population.
Although Tagoloan Community College’s dress code is widely followed, a small
percentage of students challenge the fairness or importance of the boundaries, pointing out areas
for potential change. Addressing these issues necessitates striking a careful balance between
enforcing barriers and honoring individuality in order to keep policies fair and inclusive. Rupp
(2023) emphasizes the emotional impact of overly harsh clothing standards, arguing that
adopting inclusive and supportive ways can help reduce anxiety and drive more compliance,
resulting in a more supportive and respectful atmosphere for all students.
The overall positive evaluation of Tagoloan Community College's dress code emphasizes
its significance in sustaining institutional discipline and professionalism. However, some
students have advocated for more modern and flexible norms that achieve a balance between
uniqueness and institutional requirements. Mantyi-Ncube and Langwenya (2024) discovered that
how individuals perceive apparel has a big impact on their interactions, emphasizing the need of
dress code standards that not only maintain professionalism but also allow students to express
themselves freely and bravely.
Opinions on the enforcement of the dress code at Tagoloan Community College vary,
with half of the respondents viewing it as consistent, while others feel that it is either too strict or
too lenient. This disparity highlights the need for transparent and balanced enforcement practices
that can address differing perceptions. Libang and Isuga (2023) emphasize that clarity and
fairness in the application of policies are crucial for fostering student acceptance. They suggest
that a review of enforcement strategies at the college could help ensure that the dress code is
applied consistently and equitably, creating a more positive environment for all students.
Students pointed out the need for more flexibility in the dress code, particularly with
regard to races and gender expression, in line with broader societal trends that promote inclusion
and diversity. According to student input, including clearer and more specific rules would
improve transparency and justice in the application of these policies. Such enhancements would
prove the institution’s commitment to creating a friendly and respectful atmosphere for all
students, emphasizing individuality and diversity alongside professionalism.
Conclusions
This study has explored the impact and effectiveness of dress code regulations at
Tagoloan Community College. It has emphasized how these policies affect students’ academic
performance, self-expression, and the overall campus atmosphere. The results indicate that while
dress codes help uphold a professional ambiance and instill discipline, there is a necessity for a
more comprehensive approach that balances institutional norms with recognition for individual
expression. Student opinions on the dress code were varied, with some seeing it as essential for
creating a conducive learning environment, while others believed it constrained their ability to
express themselves freely. Looking ahead, it is crucial for the college administration to regularly
assess and update dress code guidelines in collaboration with students, ensuring that they remain
pertinent, equitable, and in line with the evolving needs and values of the student community. Im
doing so, Tagoloan Community College can continue to uphold its commitment to providing
positive and respectful academic experience for all students.
EXHAUSTIVE DISCUSSIONS
Dress code policies at Tagoloan Community College, like at many educational
institutions, are designed to promote discipline, professionalism, and a focused learning
environment, but they also come with significant challenges and criticisms. The primary
objective of such policies is to ensure that students present themselves in a manner that is
respectful, appropriate, and conducive to academic success, aiming to reduce distractions and
foster a sense of equality by minimizing peer pressure related to fashion. Such policies can also
prepare students for the professional world, where dress codes are often enforced. However,
these policies are not without their issues. Critics argue that dress codes can stifle self-
expression, particularly among young people who view clothing as a key avenue for
individuality.
The potential for biased enforcement is another concern, as students from marginalized
communities may find themselves disproportionately targeted, especially when the dress code is
enforced more strictly for certain groups, such as girls or students from specific cultural
backgrounds. The requirement to adhere to a dress code can also clash with cultural and religious
identities, as students may feel that their attire, such as head coverings or culturally significant
clothing, is unfairly restricted. Furthermore, some view these policies as outdated, questioning
their relevance in modern educational settings, particularly in a diverse, digitally connected
world where individual identity is increasingly embraced. The imposition of dress codes may
even lead to classroom disruptions, as students who disagree with the rules might focus more on
protesting the policy than on their studies.
Balancing the need for regulation with respect for personal freedoms is a delicate
challenge for administrators, and while dress codes can provide a structured learning
environment, they must be carefully crafted and regularly updated to reflect the values of
inclusivity, respect, and the diverse needs of the student body, ensuring that the policy is not
overly restrictive or discriminatory. In the end, a well-constructed dress code policy at Tagoloan
Community College should aim to encourage both professionalism and personal expression in a
manner that supports the educational goals of the institution while maintaining fairness and
respect for all students.
