1. Is zero an integer?
2. Is a whole number a real number?
3. Is a rational number an irrational number?
4. Is an integer a whole number?
5. Is a natural number a whole number?
Definition of Terms
DOMAIN – is the set of first elements in the ordered pairs.
Example : In the ordered pairs, {(1,2),(-1,-2),(3,4),(-3,-4)}, the
domain is {1,-1,3,-3}.
RANGE – is the set of second elements in the ordered pairs.
Example : In the ordered pairs, {(1,2),(-1,-2),(3,4),(-3,-4)}, the
range is {2,-2,4,-4}.
REAL NUMBERS – is the set of rational numbers (terminating or
repeating decimals) and irrational numbers
(nonterminating and nonrepeating decimals).
FINDING THE DOMAIN AND RANGE OF LINEAR FUNCTIONS
A. TABLE OF VALUES
Given the values of the domain, we can determine the range of linear
functions by evaluation.
Example: f(x) = 2x + 1 x -1 0 1
y
Domain (D) = {-1,0,1}
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Find the range:
If x = -1, If x = 0, If x = 1,
f(-1) = 2(-1) + 1 f(0) = 2(0) + 1 f(1) = 2(1) + 1
f(-1) = (-2) + 1 f(0) = 0 + 1 f(1) = 2 + 1
f(-1) = -1 f(0) = 1 f(1) = 3
x -1 0 1
y -1 1 3
Therefore, Range(R) = {-1,1,3}.
B. GRAPH
Given the graph to determine the domain of the linear function, we need to
look the boundaries occupied by the graph in the x-axis. Same with the
range, which can be found at the y-axis.
Example:
Since the given line extends on opposite
directions, the values of x and y are all
elements of the set of real numbers (ℝ).
In symbol, Domain D = {x|x є ℝ}
Range(R) = {y|y є ℝ}
Since the given line stops at y=2, the
range is 2 and below while the x values
are all real numbers (ℝ)..
In symbol, Domain(D) = {x|x є ℝ} andand
Range(R) = {y|y є ℝ, y ≤ 2}
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
The arrows on the x-axis indicate that the
graph extends on both directions, so the
domain of the function is the set of all
real numbers. Notice that the graph does
not include any negative values for the
range, the range is only non-negative real
numbers,thus the range of the function is
greater than or equal to zero.
In symbol, Domain(D)={𝑥|𝑥𝜖ℝ} and
Range(R) ={𝑦|𝑦 ≥ 0}
• The horizontal extent of the graph
is –3 to 1.
Domain: {𝒙| − 𝟑 < 𝒙 ≤ 𝟏}
• The vertical extent of the graph is 0
to –4.
Range: {𝒚|𝟎 ≤ 𝒚 ≤ −𝟒}
C. EQUATION
• If f(x) = mx + b, where m ≠ 0, then any value can be substituted to x.
Therefore, the domain is equal to x such that x is a real number.
In symbols, D = {x|x є ℝ}.
Since f(x) is the same as y, then y can be any value.
Therefore, the range is equal to y such than y is a real number.
In symbols, R = {y|y є ℝ}.
Examples:
1. f(x) = x
D = {x|x є ℝ}
R = {y|y є ℝ}
2. f(x) = 2x – 1
D = {x|x є ℝ}
R = {y|y є ℝ}
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
3. f(x) = -3x + 1
D = {x|x є ℝ}
R = {y|y є ℝ}
• If f(x) = c, where c is a constant, therefore, the domain is ALL REAL
NUMBERS and the range is equal to the constant given or R = {c}
since f(x) is the same as y.
Examples :
1. f(x) = 7 2. f(x) = -16
D = {x|x є ℝ} D = {x|x є ℝ}
R = {7} R = {-16}
• If a function is in fraction form, we get the denominator and put ≠ 0
and then solve for x to identify the restriction for the domain. While
sometimes, the range is y such that y is a real number or R = {yly є ℝ
where y ≠ 0 }.
Examples:
1. f(x) = 1
x+4
Solution :
▪ DOMAIN:
x+4≠0
x+4–4≠0–4
x + 0 ≠ -4
x ≠ -4
x ≠ -4
• RANGE:
No matter how large or small x becomes, f(x) will never
be equal to zero. So the range of f(x) is "all real numbers
except zero".
Therefore, D = {x|x є ℝ where x ≠ -4}
R = {yly є ℝ where y ≠ 0 }.
2. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 4
Solution:
• DOMAIN:
The function f(x) = x2 - 4 is
defined for all real values of x
(because there are no restrictions on the value of x).
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Hence, the domain of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) is " set of all real numbers ".
In symbol,
Domain={𝑥|𝑥𝜖ℝ}
• RANGE:
Since x2 is never negative, x2 - 4 is never less than -4.
Hence, the range of f(x) is “all real numbers greater
than or equal to -4.”
In symbol,
Range: {𝒚|𝒚 ≥ −𝟒}
Therefore, D = {x|x є ℝ }
R = {yly є ℝ where 𝑦 ≥ −𝟒 }.

A function is a relation for which each value from the domain(x) is
associated with exactly one value from the range (y). Functions can be either
one to one or many to one.
In general, LINEAR FUNCTION is a function whose domain (x-value) is
paired with one range (y-value) only and is represented by a line.
In a linear function, a constant change in x corresponds to a constant change
in y.

2. Does the table of values represents a linear function or not?
i.
The table of values shows a constant change of +1 in x corresponds
to a constant change of -3 in y, therefore the points satisfy a linear
function.
The points or ordered pairs from the table form a straight line.
ii.
The table of values shows a constant change of +1 in x but does not
corresponds to a constant change in y, therefore these points does
not satisfy a linear function. The points or ordered pairs from the table
does not lie on a straight line.
3. Does the set of ordered pairs represents a linear function or not?
{ (2,4), (5,3), (8,2), (11,1)}
• Write the ordered pairs in
table and get the difference n
x and in y values.
• The table of values shows a constant change of +3 in x
corresponds to a constant change of -1 in y, therefore the
points satisfy a linear function.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
4. To determine if an equation is a function, you have to evaluate it by the
given domain. Verify if each x-value is paired with one y-value only.
EXAMPLE : f(x) = 2x + 3 if x = {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2}
If x = -2, If x = -1,
f(x) = 2x + 3 f(x) = 2x + 3
f(x) = 2(-2) + 3 f(x) = 2(-1) + 3
f(x) = (-4) + 3 f(x) = (-2) + 3
f(x) = -1 f(x) = 1
If x = 0, If x = 1,
f(x) = 2x + 3 f(x) = 2x + 3
f(x) = 2(0) + 3 f(x) = 2(1) + 3
f(x) = 0 + 3 f(x) = 2 + 3
f(x) = 3 f(x) = 5
If x = 2,
f(x) = 2x + 3
f(x) = 2(2) + 3 x -2 -1 0 1 2
f(x) = 4 + 3 y -1 1 3 5 7
f(x) = 7
From the table of values, each x-value is paired with one y-value only.
Therefore, the given equation is a function.

b. using intercepts
The x-intercept (x,0) is a point in the x-axis while y-intercept (0,y) is
a point in the y-axis where the line pass through.
f(x) = x - 4
let f(x) = 0
0=x-4+4
0+4=x
+4=x
x=4
Therefore, the line passes through x = 4 and at (0,4).
c. using slope
Slope is the steepness of the line. It is denoted by rise/run where
rise is y2-y1 and run is x2-x1.
Given: f(x) = 2x + 3
In this example, the equation is in the slope-intercept form y=mx+b
where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. Therefore the slope is
2 and the y-intercept is 3. In this case, we plot the y-intercept in the
graph. Since the slope is 2, we must write it in fraction form.
Therefore, the slope is 2/1 where the rise is 2 units and the run is 1
unit.
