Introduction
Since environmental pollution is continuously posing serious
threats to both ecosystems and public health, air quality
monitoring is gaining importance steadily in recent times. Since
poor air quality causes cardiac problems, respiratory illnesses,
and deterioration of the environment, real-time systems should
be in operation to provide timely information and solutions.
This project presents an IoT-based air monitoring system to
gather, assess, and report air quality indicators in real time. There
are several sensors capturing the most important environmental
parameters, such as temperature, humidity, PM concentrations,
and gas concentrations of CO₂ and CO. The sensor data can be
wirelessly transmitted to a cloud-based platform such that users
can view rich reports and alarms using web or mobile
applications.
The system gives all the stakeholders, from people and
community to policymakers, insight as a proactive approach to
solve air quality issues. For that reason, the Internet of Things Air
Monitoring System's automated and scalable design makes it an
effective means for encouraging environmentally friendly
practices, facilitating the early detection of pollution incidents,
and raising more public awareness about environmental
conditions.
Background of the Study
Air pollution has become an immense global concern because it
greatly affects the ecosystem, human health, and the climate.
The concentration of pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM),
carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and other harmful
gases, has increased mainly due to rapid urbanization, industrial
activity, and vehicle emissions. Prolonged exposure to air
pollution can result in heart conditions, respiratory diseases, and
premature death. This means that now more than ever is the
need to have efficient monitoring systems in place with regard to
checking and controlling air quality.
Although traditional air quality monitoring stations are very
accurate, their cost and maintenance requirements usually limit
the area coverage of traditional air quality monitoring stations.
These constraints limit their ability to provide localized, real-time
data. Recent developments in Internet of Things technology have
presented a new opportunity to overcome those challenges.
Combining inexpensive sensors with the immense capabilities of
Internet of Things networks makes it possible to make air quality
monitoring far more accessible, scalable, and effective.
A decreased gap between the upsurge of real-time environmental
data needed and the high cost associated with monitoring
solutions marks the goal of an air monitoring system using
Internet of Things. IoT sensors can be placed at all points in the
area and wirelessly transmit information to central platforms that
will analyze, visualize, and alert concerned areas. This strategy
can help lawmakers enforce air quality regulation while also
letting people and communities decide with more informed
choices.
IoT technology used in air monitoring systems is inventively a
workable solution to environmental issues. This research focuses
on proving that these systems can monitor the air quality in real
time, grow environmental awareness, and bring sustainable
activities into people's lives.
