Questions to Ponder

the space provided.
1. In “Ecological Literacy among Secondary School Students,” Adawiah and
Norzan (2013) identified essential ecological concepts that students need
to understand. Let us see how well you know and understand these
concepts by writing on the corresponding column key ideas.
Concepts Key Ideas
The Ecosystem It is made up of all the living species
that share an environment, ranging
from the plants and animals to
microscopic organisms.
Succession it is the evolution of vegetations
species composition, structure or
architecture over time.
Energy Flow It is the movement of energy
through living organisms in an
environment. All living organisms
can be classified as producers and
consumers, and those producers
and consumer can be classified
further to form food chain. Each
level of food chain is referred to as a
trophic level.
Conservation of Resources It is the reduction in the usage of
water, energy and raw materials. It
is the management of human use of
natural resources to maximize
benefit to current generations while
maintaining capacity to satisfy the
needs of future generations.

2. What environmental issues and concerns move you and provoke you to
action? What efforts and practical steps do you do to influence others to
take action?
Global warming and climate change are the topics that
motivate me to take an action. The steps that I want to do is
to influence and encouraged (speak up) others to do proper
handlings of our waste. The 3r’s reduce, re-use and recycle. I
can also make an imagery about it, by telling them how to
prepared and prevent this issue.

1. Develop a personal definition of sustainability.
Sustainability can be described as something’s ability or capacity
to be maintained or to sustain itself. It’s about taking what we need
to exist without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs. If an activity is claimed to be sustainable, it
should be able to continue indefinitely. Sustainability enhances the
quality our lives by protecting our ecosystem and conserving
natural resources for the future generations. In the business world,
sustainability is connected with a company’s holistic approach,
which consider everything from manufacturing to logistics to
customer service. The most obvious example of sustainability is
arguably renewable clean energy. Three instances are provided
below. Solar energy is generated when the sun’s electromagnetic
radiation is caught and converted into electricity and heat. Wind
turbines transform wind kinetic energy into mechanical power.
2. What are greening initiatives done by your department or college?
Tree planting
Reduce re-use recycled
Composing program
Campus gardens
Reducing waste
Encourage better modes of transportation
Adopting cleaner energy sources
Leadership in energy in environmental design
3. What personal greening initiative would you propose to your own campus,
community, and home?
Tree planting
Is a great way to get our community to involve something that will
improve our environment. Fresh air, and even increase the value of
our land. We need to do to a plan to plant inside the neighborhood
for this event. Make certain that tree kind and placement are
acceptable and will bring the most value to our community.
Organize a Recycling Day
Many people’s yearly spring cleaning coincides with earth day,
giving it the ideal time to educate residents and provide additional
resources to reduce,re-use,recycle. Talk to our homeowners to get
a sense of what they want to do, and then plan a recycling event
that will help us to achieve our goal.
