ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN SINGAPORE:
Environmental issues in Singapore include air, water pollution, and
deforestation. The government established the Singapore Green Plan in
1992 to help with environmental issues. Since 1819, more than 95% of its
590 square km of vegetation has been cleared.
AFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SINGAPORE:
Periods of drought can affect the reliability of Singapore’s water supply, while
sudden episodes of intense rainfall could lead to floods.
A temperature increase of 1.5°C to 2.5°C could affect the natural diversity of
Singapore’s plants and animals at risk.
Frequent and severe instances of warm weather may lead to discomfort among
the elderly and sick.
Rising temperatures will negatively affect urban areas. It can also lead to thermal
discomfort.
By 2100, the seas surrounding Singapore could rise by up to 1 metre.
Weather Extremities
Global warming gives rise to more frequent and intense storms, droughts, floods
and cyclones. These are a threat to human lives and food security.
We contribute 0.11 per cent to global emissions However, experts emphasise that
everyone plays a part in resolving the crisis of climate change.
SOLUTIONS OF CONSERVING THE ENVIRONMENT OF SINGAPORE:
Safeguard our biodiversity
This strategy aims at conserving Singapore's habitats and ecosystems for long-term
sustainability. Concerted efforts are made to protect existing native species,
habitats and ecosystems, and to re-establish species.
Species Conservation and Recovery Programmes
Programmes are being carried out in Singapore, designed to conserve and recover
native species. Singapore's conservation work with Oriental Pied Hornbills has
received international attention.
Active, Beautiful and Clean (ABC) Waters Programme
It includes initiatives to manage catchments and waterways. The drains, canals and
reservoirs are now being transformed into beautiful streams, flowing rivers and
vibrant lakes through the ABC Waters Programme.
Volunteer and Outreach Programmes
A variety of programmes are available for nature conservation. This includes
volunteering as guides at nature areas, participating in habitat monitoring and
giving a hand in reforestation projects.
