Reading Strategies (ENGL 113)

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to help English language learners including teachers’ trainers
develop practices of different reading strategies. In order to reach this goal,
various representations of written texts related to diverse genres are analyzed.
Various perspectives of the same topic demonstrate how written texts may be
presented. This aim of developing reading strategies helps students realize the
possibilities of juxtaposition and rhetorical analysis. This is principally achieved
through the development of the reading process, and through training on reading
strategies, critical thinking skills and vocabulary-building exercises. This is

2. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE MODULE


Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Read a text for meaning.
- Grasp paragraph sense and organize facts.
- Skim a reading passage for the main idea (s).
- Scan a reading passage for specific details.

Throughout the course, students will also be encouraged to avail the fully integrated
online course and/or in-person which provides a conducive environment for the
students to expand their learning through automatically graded practice tasks and
assessments.

Respect your classmates. This class welcomes a variety of ideas and perspectives.
You do not have to agree with everything, but please be respectful of others in the
class.

Attendance and Participation


Attendance is required to be successful in this course. I will keep an attendance record
for every class. To benefit from in-class discussion, group work, instruction, and
activities students must be present and on time to class.
Excused Absences: If student has an emergency, family emergency or is very ill, it is
his responsibility to communicate with me and provide appropriate documentations. If
you cannot attend the class, please contact me with a reason for your absence.

Personal Electronics and acceptable Use


Personal electronics such as cell phones, iPad, and MP3 players should be turned off
and put away during classes unless the instructor has specifically given permission for
students to use them. If students do not follow this policy, the instructor may count
them absent or ask them to leave the class.

4. CLASS PARTICIPATION
Class meetings will consist of some lecture and discussions of readings assigned
for class. Along with the discussions, we will be doing in-class exercises which are
relevant to the issues in the readings.

Attendance is compulsory for the module. Your attendance record needs to be 75%
or above. If you miss a class because you are ill or have other urgent personal
problems, it is your responsibility to catch up on the contents of the class/es you
missed. If your absences are legitimate due to mitigating circumstances, you will
need to provide appropriate evidence demonstrating this to the lecturer- this could
be a medical certificate, etc.

Practical Part (if any)


The practical part of Reading Strategies is based on exercises and the following
practical approach to the acquisition of language skills. This enables students to
practice each theoretical item:
1. Students are given homework on each of the above theoretical items to enhance their
reading skills.
2. Students are encouraged to put solutions on the board to questions about the main
idea of the text, the academic content, and the supporting details in a paragraph.
3. Students are encouraged to work in groups of two or more and then give a
presentation.
4. Students are encouraged to read their answers aloud, such as their conclusions,
vocabulary meaning, acronyms, and analysis of an idea.
