How did Impressionism started?

Impressionism is a movement of art that emerged in 1870s
France. Rejecting the rigid rules of the beaux-arts (“fine
arts”), Impressionist artists showcased a new way to
observe and depict the world in their work, foregoing
realistic portrayals for fleeting impressions of their
surroundings.
Impressionism was developed by Claude Monet and other
Paris-based artists from the early 1860s. (Though the
process of painting on the spot can be said to have been
pioneered in Britain by John Constable in around 1813–17
through his desire to paint nature in a realistic way).
The name was coined from the title of a work by French
painter Claude Monet, Impression , soleil levant ( Impression
Sunrise)
Characteristics of Impressionist Art
● Brush Strokes. Distinctive brush strokes are one of the main
characteristics of Impressionist art. Impressionist painters used
rapid, spontaneous, loose, large, and visible brush stokes.
● Lines. The lines of the Impressionist art are often blurry,
which do not clearly define one object from another in a
painting.
● Lighting. Lighting was one of the focal points of the
Impressionist art movement. Impressionist painters like Monet
showed ever-changing light on a subject through his artwork.
● Colors. Impressionist paintings are usually in separated
colors, allowing viewers’ perception to mix them. The hues in
the paintings reflect different tones found in the subject.
● Subjects. Impressionist painters break the norm of
traditional painting by introducing everyday subjects in their
paintings.

outgrowth movement known as post impressionism emerged.
Post-Impressionism was a predominantly French art movement
that developed roughly between 1886 and 1905, from the last
Impressionist exhibition to the birth of Fauvism. Post-
Impressionism emerged as a reaction against Impressionists'
concern for the naturalistic depiction of light and colour. Its
broad emphasis on abstract qualities or symbolic content
means Post-Impressionism encompasses Les Nabis, Neo-
Impressionism, Symbolism, Cloisonnism, the Pont-Aven School,
and Synthetism, along with some later Impressionists' work.
The movement's principal artists were Paul Cézanne, Paul
Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat.
▪ Paul Cezanne- was a French artist and post- impressionist
painter. His work exemplified the transition from the late 19th
century impressionism to a new and radically different world of
art in the 20th century- paving the way for the next
revolutionary art movement known as expressionism.
