In-Office Disinfection of Flexible Cystoscopes

Quick Reference Tool


GATHER MATERIALS
 Soft cloth or disposable  Face shield or goggles  Timer
sponge  Protective gown or apron  Lint-free cloth
 Large container with  Soaking cap (if applicable)  70% Alcohol
enzymatic detergent  Leakage tester (Isopropyl or Ethyl)
solution  Activated high-level disinfectant/  Syringes for
 Gloves (Butyl, Nitrile for sterilant in covered soaking tray with suctioning and drying
glutaraldehyde) adequate volume to fully immerse  Rigid
scopes container/transport
box

1. Preclean – After use, immediately wipe entire housing and shaft with moistened sponge and
flush water through channel. Transport scope to reprocessing area in a rigid container to avoid
cross contamination.

2. Leak Test – Follow manufacturer’s instructions to confirm integrity of scope.

3. Manual cleaning
o Remove any seals or stopcocks and attach any cleaning adapters if required.
o Totally immerse the flexible cystoscope, including the head, in an enzymatic
detergent that is mixed according to the label directions.
o Clean all exterior surfaces with a soft cloth.
o Flush and brush all channels.
o Thoroughly rinse with clean water.

4. High-level disinfection
o Test solution for Minimum Effective Concentration and document.
o Totally immerse cystoscope, including the head, in high-level disinfectant (HLD)
prepared according to manufacturer’s instructions.
o Fill all channels with disinfectant by suctioning solution through channel with a
syringe.
o Set timer for specified immersion time.
o Document immersion time.

5. Rinsing
o Remove cystoscope from HLD and drain excess solution.
o Thoroughly rinse exterior and channels with water.
o Note: if tap water is used, flush channels with alcohol to aid in drying and inhibit
bacterial growth from tap water.
o Dry exterior surfaces with a soft, lint-free towel.
o Purge channels with air until dry.

6. Storage
o Hang scopes vertically to thoroughly dry whenever possible.
