The indefinite article a/an is used before singular countable nouns.
A/an is used: - when we mention something for the first time: Example: I got a letter yesterday. - коли обираємо один з декількох предметів Example: In the office a phone rang. - неозначений артикль вживається перед прикметником з іменником Example: what a wonderful life. - класифікація чогось,перед назвами професій Example:The play was a comedy. She is an accountant - перед іменниками,коли ми говоримо в загальному значенні Example:A pilot flies planes. - вживається після дієслів to be,to have Example: We have got a car. - in certain fixed expressions: have a look,have a good/bad time,have a toothache,it’s a pity/shame,a matter of fact,be in a hurry,be at loss,go for a walk,in a low/loud voice,all of a sudden,tell a lie,at a time,at a speed of. The definite article the is used before countable and uncountable nouns. The is used: - перед тим,що вже згадувалось,або щось конкретне Example:The phone rang in my house. The is not used:
- Before names of people,streets,cities,countries,continents,islands and mountains; but: The Hague Example: Maggie Smith,Oxford Street,Mount Hoverla - Before the days of the week and months; BUT: when we talk about specific event or circumstance that happened on that day, we use the; Example: The downpour on the Saturday of that week. - With meals: breakfast,lunch,dinner(supper) BUT: when we talk about specific meal,we use the: Example: The lunch on Pearl Street was unbelievably tasty. - Before names of squares,parks and lakes; BUT: The High Street,The Avenue,The Strand,The Mall,The A5 Example: Central Park,Trafalgar Square, Lake Huron - Before the words bed,court,home,hospital,prison,school,work,university; BUT: when these words are not used for their purpose,the are used with the; Example: He went to school to get quality education She popped into the school to take her bag. - Before names of airlines or companies; Example: Air France,Orly(airport),BMW - Before names of bridges; but: The Golden Gate Bridge,the Severn Bridge Example: Tower Bridge,Hartland Covered Bridge,Millau Viaduct Bridge - in certain fixed expressions: in the direction of,in the east/south/west/north,in the sun,on the whole,on the advice of,pass the time.
