useful activities, our time will not be wasted and our hearts will also be happy
because they do what we love.

Asking hobbies

To ask other people's hobbies, we usually use sentences like the following:

• Do you have any hobbies? / Do you have any hobbies?

• What is your hobby? / What are your hobbies?
• What kind of activity do you like? / What kind of activities do you like?
• What do you like to do for fun? / What do you like to do for fun?

do in your spare time?

ENGLISH 7 | 8

Telling hobbies

To answer the questions above, we can use sentences like the following example:

• I have several activities that I like. / I have some activities that I like.
• My hobby is gardening. / My hobby is gardening.
• I like swimming / hiking / writing. / I love swimming/hiking/writing.
• I like to knit sweater and scarf. / I love knitting sweaters and scarves.
• I spend my leisure time by drawing illustrations. / I spend my free time drawing
illustrations.
• I like doing this activity because it makes me feel relaxed. / I love doing this
activity because it makes me feel relaxed.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

The present continuous (also called present progressive) is a verb tense

which is used to show that an ongoing action is happening now, either at the
moment of speech or now in a larger sense. The present continuous can also be
used to show that an action is going to take place in the near future.

Affirmative

S + to be + Verb(-ing) + Object

Example:

The boy is cooking in the kitchen

Negative

S + to be + not+ Verb(-ing) + Object

Example:

The boy is not cooking in the kitchen

ENGLISH 7 | 9
Question

To be + S + Verb(-ing) + Object

Example:

Is the boy cooking in the kitchen?

Present Continuous Uses

USE 1 Now

Use the present continuous with normal verbs to express the idea that something
is happening now, at this very moment. It can also be used to show that
something is not happening now.

Example:

He is reading his book.

USE 2 Longer Actions in Progress Now

In English, "now" can mean: this second, today, this month, this year, this century,
and so on. Sometimes, we use the present continuous to say that we are in the
process of doing a longer action which is in progress; however, we might not be
doing it at this exact second.

Example: Now, I am studying to become a doctor.

USE 3 Near Future

Sometimes, speakers use the present continuous to indicate that something will
or will not happen in the near future.

Example: I’m having dinner with friends tonight

ENGLISH 7 | 10
USE 4 Repetition and Irritation with "Always"

The present continuous with words such as "always" or "constantly" expresses the
idea that something irritating or shocking often happens. Notice that the meaning
is like simple present, but with negative emotion. Remember to put the words
"always" or "constantly" between "be" and "verb+ing."

Example: He is always coming to class late.

USE 5 New Habits

We can use the present continuous for temporary or new habits (for normal habits
that continue for a long time, we use the present simple). We often use this with
expressions like 'these days' or 'at the moment'.

Example: He's eating a lot these days

UNIT 3: My Friends and I

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

Simple present tense is a verb tense which is used to show repetition, habit
or generalization. Less commonly, the simple present can be used to talk about
scheduled actions in the near future and, in some cases, actions happening now.

VERBAL PATTERN

Affirmative

S + Verb 1 (-s/-es) + Object

Example:

• My father washes the car

• They play soccer in the backyard

Notes on the simple present

In the third person singular the verb always ends in -s:

ENGLISH 7 | 11
he wants, she needs, he gives, she thinks.

Verbs ending in -y: the third person changes the -y to -ies:

fly --> flies, cry --> cries

Exception: if there is a vowel before the -y:

play --> plays, pray --> prays

Add -es to verbs ending in: -ss, -x, -sh, -ch:

he passes, she catches, he fixes, it pushes

Negative pattern

S + do/does + not + Verb 1 + Object

Example:

My father does not wash the car

They do not play soccer in the backyard

Question pattern

Do/Does + S + Verb 1 + Object + ?

Example:

Does my father wash the car?

Do they play soccer in the backyard?

Simple Present Uses

USE 1 Repeated Actions

To express the idea that an action is repeated or usual. The action can be a habit,
a hobby, a daily event, a scheduled event or something that often happens. It
can also be something a person often forgets or usually does not do.

Example: Every twelve months, the Earth circles the Sun

ENGLISH 7 | 12
USE 2 Facts or Generalizations

The simple present can also indicate the speaker believes that a fact was true
before, is true now, and will be true in the future. It is not important if the speaker
is correct about the fact. It is also used to make generalizations about people or
things.

Example: The sun rises in the East.

USE 3 Scheduled Events in the Near Future

Speakers occasionally use simple present to talk about scheduled events in the
near future. This is most commonly done when talking about public transportation,
but it can be used with other scheduled events as well.

Example: The train leaves today at 8 AM

USE 4 Now (Non-Continuous Verbs)

Speakers sometimes use the simple present to express the idea that an action is
happening or is not happening now. This can only be done with non-continuous
verbs and certain mixed verbs.

Example: He needs help right now

Descriptive text

and married my mum. He works as a French teacher. He’s very tall—much
taller than my mum—and athletic. He’s got short blonde hair and blue eyes.
My mum’s name is Anna. She’s English. She’s quite short, and she’s got long,
curly brown hair, and brown eyes. She works at a chemist’s shop opposite our
home. She can speak French, too!
My sister Julia is 17 years old, and she’s got the same color of hair and eyes
as my father. She loves playing the piano and dancing. She’s very talented,
and she would like to be a professional musician.
I’ve got short blonde hair like my dad, but brown eyes like my mom. I love
drawing. So next week I would like to join the drawing competition at my
school “Islamic Junior High School”. Actually, we all love playing board games
together on Friday evenings, and we always order pizza. Our favorite game is
Monopoly. Oh, I almost forgot…we’ve also got a pet cat, Snowball. She’s all
white and has a lot of fur. She likes sleeping on me. Write back soon. Please,
tell me about your family too.
Love
Jonathan

I have a favorite doll. It is an original Teddy Bear from America. Aunt Lily gave
it to me last year when she returned from her business trip in New York. I was
very happy. I put it on a cabinet next to my bed. Sometimes I use it as a pillow.
My Teddy Bear is very big, and the colour is brown. It is about 150 centimeters
tall and the width is about 50 centimeters. When I put it on my bed it will
occupy half of it. It is almost as big as my body. It is made of typical kind of
fabric called rasfur. The head is round with the size of 25 centimeters. It has
two ears which located on top of its head. The shape of the ear is half circle
and the size is half of my palm. The colour of its eye is dark brown. I think it is

A taste of Indonesia you will crave long after your journey. Gado-gado is a
salad made of veggies, hard-boiled eggs, tempeh, tofu, potato, and mouth-
watering peanut sauce.
You will find some cabbage, spinach, bean sprouts, and jack fruit in it,
along with bitter melon, corn, mirliton, cucumber among the vegetables in
gado-gado. Traditionally the vegetables are blanched or lightly boiled
together and tofu and tempeh are fried separately.
The peanut sauce is the magical touch that makes the salad heavenly
good. It’s creamy, but with texture, spicy, but sweet and brings all the
ingredients to an exotic and surprising harmony.
Each island has a slightly different version of gado-gado. In Java, you will

stands are found easily, especially if you follow the smell and the smoke. It’s
believed that satays originated from Java, inspired by the traders from the
Middle East, but now they are popular all across SE Asia.
The meat, diced into small bits, is seasoned or marinated before placing on
the grill. You will find all options there: chicken, goat, beef, fish, tofu… Satay
will be served with peanut or soy sauce and oftentimes accompanied by the
rice cake called ketupat (wrapped in the palm leaf).

A transitive verb is a verb that coexists with a direct object. This type of
action verb describes what the subject does to an object. The following is an
example of a transitive verb:

• My parents eat fried chicken

• Lizzie married a man from Birmingham
• Rudi chewed his gum

From the example above it can be seen that the verb is followed by a direct
object, an object that gets a direct effect from the subject.

Intransitive Verb

An intransitive verb is a verb as opposed to a transitive verb. So, objects

adjacent to verbs do not get a direct effect from the actions performed by the
subject. The following is an example of an Intransitive Verb:

• She walks to the kitchen

• They drive slowly
• Lizzie married at the Cathedral Church

From the example above, it can be seen that the verb is not followed by an
object that gets a direct effect from the subject.

USE OF "DO/DOES' IN SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

Characteristics of Sentences Using Do/Does

• Do/Does is classified as an irregular verb which means to do or do or

complete. The forms of verb-2 and verb-3 are DID, and DONE, respectively.
• Do is used for the subject of the personal pronoun “I, You, We, They”
• Does is used for the third person subject: “He, She, It”
• Do/Does only exists in simple present tense sentences
• Do/Does only exists in negative sentences (don't/doesn't) and
question/interrogative (?)

Negative Sentences with Do's and Does

In the negative form must be added the note so that it becomes do not and does
not. The formula looks like this: S + Do/Does + Not + Verb 1. Consider the following
sentence.

formula is like this: Do/Does + Subject + Verb 1 + ?

Arriving at a new home
I was set down from the carrier’s cart at the age of here; and there with a
sense of bewilderment and terror my life in the village began. The June grass,
amongst which I stood, was taller than I was, and I wept. I had never been so
close to grass before. It towered above me and all around me, each blade
tattooed with tiger-skins of sunlight. It was knife-edge, dark and a wicked
green, thick as a forest and alive with grasshoppers that chirped and
chattered and leapt through the air like monkeys. I was lost and didn’t know
where to move. A tropic heat oozed from the ground, rank with sharp odors
of roots and nettles. Snow-clouds of elder blossom banked in the sky,
showering upon me he fumes and flakes of their sweet and giddy suffocation.
High overhead ran frenzied larks, screaming, as tough the sky were tearing
apart. For the first time I was out of the sight of humans. For the first time in my
life I was alone in a world whose behaviour I could neither predict nor fathom:
a world of birds that squealed, of plants that stank, of insects that sprang
about warning. I was lost and I did not expect to be found again. I put back
my head and howled, the sun hit me smartly on the face, like a bully.
