PART I. PROBLEM SOLVING
Instruction: Solve the following problems. Show your solution and box the final answer.
Problem # 1. A constant head permeability test is performed on a sample of granular soil.
The length of soil sample is 15 cm and the cross-sectional area is 10 cm^2. If a 24 cm^3 volume
of water passes through the oil sample in a 3-minute period and the constant head is 30 cm
determine the following (10 pts)
a. Determine the coefficient of permeability of the soil.
b. Find the discharge velocity.
c. Compute the seepage velocity if the void ratio is 0.64.
Problem # 2. A pumping test was made in a sand layer extending to a depth of 15m. The
initial ground water table is located 2 m. below the ground surface. Observation wells were
sighted at distances 3m and 7.5m from the pumping well. Using a discharge of 0.4 m^3 per hour,
a steady level is attained at the pumping well. The measured drawdowns at the two observation
wells are 1.5 m and 0.35 m. respectively. (10 pts)
a. Find the hydraulic head at the first observation well.
b. Find the hydraulic head at the second observation well.
c. Compute the coefficient of permeability.
Problem # 3. The figure show a granular soil in the
tank having downgrade seepage. The water level in the tank
is held constant by adjusting the supply from the top and
outflow at the bottom. (10 pts)
a. Determine the total stress at the bottom.
b. Find the pore or water pressure at the bottom.
c. Compute the effective stress at the bottom.
Problem # 4. A 2m. clay layer has values of e = 0.92, Gs = 2.72 and liquid limit of 40%.
Above the clay is a 3m thick layer of sand with e =0.50 and Gs = 2.62. The water table is located
1.6 m below the ground. If a 3m thick backfill is placed on the ground surface having a unit
weight of 17.3 kN/m^3, determine the following: (10 pts)
a. Compression index of clay.
b. Effective pressure at the midpoint of clay.
c. Primary settlement for normally consolidated clay.
Problem # 5. The angle of friction of a compacted dry sand is 37°. In a direct shear test on
the sand, a normal stress of 150 kN/m^2 was applied. The size of the specimen was 50mm x
50mm 30 mm (height): (10 pts)
a. Compute the shearing stress.
b. What shear force will cause will cause shear failure?
c. Determine the shear stress at a depth 3m. If the void ratio of the soil is 0.60. Sp. Gr. of
sand is 2.70.
