2. To study the electrical systems and components utilized in metro rail.
3. To gain insights into power supply management in metro operations.
4. To observe how automation integrates with electrical systems in public transit.
Overview of MTS
North-South Corridor of Lucknow Metro Rail Project starts from CCS Airport and ends at
Munshi Pulia. Overall length of corridor is 22,878 km. Out of which 19,438 km is elevated
and remaining 3.44 km is underground. Two At-grade ramps have been provided along the
corridor covering length of 0.774 km. The underground portion is being excavated by 2
TBMs whose excavation diameters are respectively 6.535m (TBM1) and 6,556m (TBM2)
resulting in internal tunnels diam. of 5.8m. There are total 22 stations along the corridor out
of which 19 stations are elevated and 4 (CCS Airport, Hussainganj, Sachivalaya and
Hazratganj) are in underground and have been designed & developed keeping in mind rich
heritage of the city and high standard of Passenger comfort and safety. Operating hours
extend from 5:30 AM to 11:00 PM, with fares ranging between ₹10 to ₹65, catering to a
broad demographic of commuters.
Headquartered in Civil Lines, Kanpur, MTS emphasizes sustainability and operational
excellence. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, it incorporates energy-efficient
practices, significantly reducing environmental impact. With its focus on technological
innovation and sustainable development, MTS is a cornerstone of modern urban mobility
in India.

environmental impact and enhance energy independence.
f. The Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS)
The Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS) in the Lucknow Metro is a critical component
designed to ensure passenger safety and comfort within the underground sections of the
metro network. Its primary functions include maintaining air quality, regulating
temperature, and providing effective smoke control during emergencies.
Key Features of the TVS in Lucknow Metro:
• Air Quality Management: The system supplies fresh air to underground tunnels
and stations, ensuring adequate oxygen levels and the removal of pollutants is
shown in fig:2
• Temperature Regulation: By controlling airflow, the TVS helps dissipate heat
generated by train operations and electrical equipment, maintaining a comfortable
environment for passengers.
• Emergency Smoke Control: In the event of a fire, the TVS is designed to manage
and extract smoke, facilitating safe evacuation routes and aiding firefighting efforts.
• Components of the TVS: Tunnel Ventilation Fans: A total of 144 tunnel
ventilation or trackway exhaust fans are installed to manage airflow within the
tunnels
• Dampers: There are 288 TVS dampers that control the direction and flow of air,
essential for both normal and emergency operations.
• Sound Attenuators: To minimize noise levels, 288 tunnel ventilation sound
attenuators are incorporated, ensuring a quieter environment for passengers.
• Control Systems: The TVS is integrated with the Building Management System
(BMS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, allowing
for real-time monitoring and control.
Operational Modes:
• Normal Operation: During regular metro services, the TVS maintains optimal air
quality and temperature by regulating airflow based on real-time data.
• Emergency Operation: In case of incidents like fire, the system switches to
emergency mode, controlling smoke and providing clear evacuation paths for
passengers.
• The implementation of the TVS in Lucknow Metro reflects a commitment to safety,
efficiency, and passenger comfort, aligning with modern engineering standards in
urban transit systems.

g. Building Management System (BMS):
The Building Management System (BMS) in the Lucknow Metro is a sophisticated
framework designed to monitor and control various infrastructure components, ensuring
efficient and safe operations. This system integrates multiple subsystems, including
electrical, mechanical, and security systems, to provide centralized oversight and
management.
Key Functions of the BMS in Lucknow Metro:
• Energy Management: The BMS optimizes energy consumption by monitoring and
controlling lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
across stations and other facilities. This leads to significant energy savings and
reduces operational costs.
• Safety and Security Monitoring: By integrating surveillance cameras, access
control systems, and fire detection alarms, the BMS enhances passenger safety. It
allows for real-time monitoring and swift response to any security or safety
incidents.
• Operational Efficiency: The system facilitates the seamless operation of various
subsystems, ensuring that all components function harmoniously. This integration
minimizes downtime and enhances the reliability of metro services.
• Remote Monitoring and Control: Operators can oversee and manage station
facilities remotely, enabling prompt adjustments and maintenance activities as
needed.
Technological Integration:
The Lucknow Metro has embraced advanced technologies to enhance its operations.
According to Kumar Keshav, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation
Ltd. (UPMRC), the metro utilizes a fully automated Train Control Management System
(TCMS) and the latest Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology.
Additionally, energy-efficient HVAC units and digital route maps are installed in all trains
for passenger comfort.
Furthermore, the metro employs a state-of-the-art telecommunication system that provides
video calling facilities at all station control rooms and the Operation Control Centre (OCC).
This system enables train operators to communicate promptly with all trains, station control
rooms, and controllers in the OCC, ensuring coordinated and efficient operations.
The integration of the BMS with these advanced technologies underscores the Lucknow
