It is common in a family to face difficulties, especially in the rural areas. People often

experience different struggles from their everyday lives. They are affected from various aspects of

life.

Sagkahan is a barangay in the municipality of Carigara, in the province of Leyte. Its

population as determined by the 2020 Census was 5,362. This represented 9.81% of the total

population of Carigara. The household population of Sagkahan in the 2015 Census was 1,135 broken

down into 264 households or an average of 4.30 members per household.

According to Calyd T. Cerio (2019) There are five sociological theories which explains the

rural poverty in the country: individual attributes, culture, and religious beliefs; access and

entitlements; political and economic situation; social circumstances; and unpredicted shocks.

Accordingly, rural poverty is still individual phenomena affected by wider economic, political and

societal circumstances that lead the rural poor to greater inequality.

This study gives more information about the issues revolving in a household. This study aims

to figure out the factors contributing to the struggles of some families in the country.

Theoretical Framework

According to Move For Hunger (2023), a non-profit organization, poverty is more than just

missing a meal. When families do not have access to everything, their health and livelihood suffer,

trapping them in a vicious cycle that affects one generation after another.

The findings of Frede Moreno & Josephine Sulasula (2024), revealed that economic

survival is sustained primarily through networks of family and community, alongside

precarious work in the informal sector. Although government programs like the Pantawid

Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) provide temporary relief, they are insufficient to address

the underlying structural causes of poverty.

By studying these theoretical frameworks, this studies explained that Filipinos’ still need a lot

of support from the government. They are facing a lot of difficulties and needs help to overcome this

issue in the society. Through qualìtative investigation, this study’s objective is to know the personal

experiences, the struggles, the coping mechanisms and how the families strive to live.
