Motorcycle accidents in the Philippines are a major road safety concern, primarily due to low visibility and stability issues, with a reported 31,186 crashes in 2023. Inadequate lighting and lack of advanced safety features contribute to these risks, as traditional motorcycle designs do not provide sufficient visibility or stability during sudden maneuvers. This study proposes an enhanced safety system that incorporates adaptive lighting and stability control mechanisms to reduce accident rates.

High Number of Motorcycle Accidents due

to Lack of Visibility and Stability

Issues.

Tyron James Tan

PROBLEMS
Motorcycle-related accidents in the Philippines
remain a significant road safety issue,
accounting for a large percentage of traffic-
related fatalities. Many of these accidents are
caused by low visibility at night or in poor
weather conditions and stability issues during
sudden maneuvers or braking. Factors such as
inadequate lighting, poor road conditions, and
lack of safety innovations contribute to the risks
faced by motorcycle riders.
The lack of effective visibility and stability features in
motorcycles increases the likelihood of accidents, especially
in urban and highway settings. Traditional headlights and
reflectors are often insufficient, and motorcycles lack
advanced stability control systems found in cars. This study
aims to develop and evaluate an enhanced motorcycle safety
system that improves visibility through adaptive lighting
and increases stability using a gyroscopic or electronic
stability control mechanism.
VALIDATION

Motorcycle accidents in the Philippines have been a growing concern, with a

notable increase in recent years. In 2023, the Metropolitan Manila Development
Authority (MMDA) reported 31,186 motorcycle-related road crashes, up from
26,599 in 2022, marking a 17.3% increase.

Visibility issues play a significant role in these accidents. The Hurt Report, a
comprehensive motorcycle safety study, found that the failure of motorists to
detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is a predominant cause of motorcycle
accidents. The report emphasizes that the driver of the other vehicle involved in a
collision with the motorcycle often did not see the motorcycle before the collision
or saw it too late to avoid the collision.
Stability issues also contribute to motorcycle accidents. Factors
such as overbraking, underbraking, and loss of control during
sudden maneuvers are common. The Hurt Report highlights that
motorcycle riders involved in accidents often show significant
collision avoidance problems, including overbraking and
skidding the rear wheel, and underbraking the front wheel, which
greatly reduces collision avoidance deceleration.
