INTRODUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT
The post holder will be joining an enthusiastic and dynamic Plastic Surgery
Department, which has expanded significantly over the last decade. The Department
provides most areas of Plastic surgery and houses a supra-regional centre for Cleft
Lip and Palate services, the supra-regional Burns Unit and the supra-regional Laser
Service. The catchment population is approximately 3 million covering areas including
Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Isle of Wight and some patients in the Channel Islands.
Attached to the Department and integral to the service is the Wessex Rehabilitation
Centre which undertakes rehabilitation for patients who have experienced hand and
lower limb trauma.
The Plastic Surgery Unit has 17 beds and is located on Level 4 in the main building.
Main Theatres is also located on Level 4 adjacent to Radnor (Intensive Care Unit and
the High Dependency Unit). Sarum ward is the dedicated Children’s ward, and is also
located on level 4 in the main building. The Day Surgery Unit is located in the older
part of the hospital close to the library.
The Outpatients Department is situated on Level 3 in the main hospital; this also
houses the Minor Operations theatres for both Plastic Surgery and OMFS. The Plastic
Surgery Department is co-located with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, the
Laser Unit, Cleft Lip and Palate Service and is situated alongside the Orthopaedic
Service and part of the Musculoskeletal Directorate. Together with the closely located
Dermatology Unit, a comprehensive skin service is available for the area.
In addition to the aforementioned specialist services the Plastic Surgery Unit also
undertakes a substantial volume of hand surgery (adult and children), lower limb,
perineal, abdominal and breast reconstructive work, microvascular surgery and head
and neck surgery with close links with Neurosurgical, Cardiothoracic and
Gynaecological colleagues within the University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust.
The Trust is working in partnership with the local Major Trauma Centre (MTC) at
University Hospital Southampton (UHS) to deliver a Plastic Surgery Service for the
Wessex Trauma Network. Salisbury Foundation Trust (SFT) release Plastic Surgery
Consultants to cover the MTC to provide a comprehensive service reviewing Plastic
Surgery patients incorporating advice and planning for their treatment. Whilst it is
envisaged that most of the Plastic Surgery operating will be undertaken at SFT, a
dedicated bi-weekly operating list is available for SFT Plastic Surgeons. This list will
predominantly be used where it is inappropriate to transfer patients from UHS to SFT.
