2 Overspeeding increases fuel consumption and decreases fuel economy as a result of tyre rolling
friction and air resistance. While vehicles reach optimal fuel economy at different speeds, fuel
mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 80 km/h.

The relation between fuel consumption F (l/100 km) and speed V (km/h)
under some constraints is given as F = V2 /500 - V/4 + 14
On the basis of the above information, answer the following questions :
(i) Find F, when V = 40 km/h.
(ii) Find dF/dV =
(iii) Find the speed V for which fuel consumption F is minimum
(iv) Find the quantity of fuel required to travel 600 km at the speed V at which dF/dV = – 0·01.

ANSWER KEY
Question 1:
(i) R.H.D. of f(x) at x = 1:
• For x ≥ 1, f(x) = |x-3| = 3-x (since x=1, x-3 is negative).
• Rf'(1) = lim (h→ 0) [(3-(1+h)) - (3-1)] / h = lim (h→ 0) [2-h - 2] / h = lim (h→ 0) -h/h = -1
(ii) L.H.D. of f(x) at x = 1:
• For x < 1, f(x) = x²/4 - 3x/2 + 13/4
• Lf'(1) = lim (h→ 0) [((1-h)²/4 - 3(1-h)/2 + 13/4) - (1/4 - 3/2 + 13/4)] / -h
= lim (h→ 0) [(1 - 2h + h²)/4 - 3/2 + 3h/2 + 13/4 - 1/4 + 3/2 - 13/4] / -h

14
= lim (h→ 0) [1/4 - h/2 + h²/4 + 3h/2 - 1/4] / -h
= lim (h→ 0) [h²/4 + h] / -h = lim (h→ 0) [h/4 + 1] / -1 = -1
(iii) At which point f(x) is not-differentiable:
• At x = 1, L.H.D. = -1 and R.H.D. = -1. So, f(x) is differentiable at x = 1.
• The absolute value function |x-3| has a sharp turn at x = 3. Let's check differentiability there.
o For x > 3, f(x) = x - 3, f'(x) = 1
o For x < 3, f(x) = 3 - x, f'(x) = -1
o L.H.D. at x=3 is -1, R.H.D. at x=3 is 1. Since they are not equal, f(x) is not differentiable at
x = 3.
(iv) Find the value of f'(2):
• Since 2 ≥ 1, f(x) = |x-3| = 3-x (for x values around 2).
• f'(x) = -1
• f'(2) = -1
Question 2:
(i) Find F, when V = 40 km/h:
• F = (40)² / 500 - 40 / 4 + 14 = 1600 / 500 - 10 + 14 = 3.2 + 4 = 7.2
(ii) Find dF/dV:
• dF/dV = (2V / 500) - 1/4 = V / 250 - 1/4
(iii) Find the speed V for which fuel consumption F is minimum:
• Set dF/dV = 0: V / 250 - 1/4 = 0
• V / 250 = 1/4
• V = 250 / 4 = 62.5 km/h
(iv) Find the quantity of fuel required:
• Set dF/dV = -0.01: V / 250 - 1/4 = -0.01
• V / 250 = 0.25 - 0.01 = 0.24
• V = 0.24 * 250 = 60 km/h
• Find F at V = 60 km/h: F = (60)² / 500 - 60 / 4 + 14 = 3600 / 500 - 15 + 14 = 7.2 - 1 = 6.2 (liters/100
km)
• Quantity of fuel = 6.2 liters/100 km * (600 km / 100 km) = 6.2 * 6 = 37.2 liters
Question 3:
(i) -sin(√x) / (2√x)
(ii) 2sin(4x+6)
(iii) 1 / √x² + 1

be homogeneous if F(x, y) is a homogeneous function of degree zero, whereas a function F(x, y) is a
homogeneous function of degree n if F(λx, λy) = λn F(x, y). To solve a homogeneous differential
dy y
equation of the type = F(x, y) = g ( ), we make the substitution y = vx and then separate the
dx x
variables.
Based on the above, answer the following questions:

4 A Veterinary doctor was examining a sick cat brought by a pet lover. When it was brought to the
hospital,it was already dead. The pet lover wanted to
find its time of death. He took the temperature of the
cat at 11.30 pm which was 94.6 F. He took the
temperature again after one hour; the temperature
was lower than the first observation. It was 93.4 F.
The room in which the cat was put is always at 70 F.
The normal temperature of the cat is taken as 98.6 F
when it was alive. The doctor estimated the time
of death using Newton law of cooling which is
governed by the differential equation: dT/ dt ∝ (𝑇
− 70), where 70 F is the room temperature and T is
the temperature of the object at time t. Substituting
the two different observations of T and t made, in the solution of the differential equation dT/ dt = k
(𝑇 − 70) where k is a constant of proportion, time of death is calculated.
(i) Find the solution of the differential equation dT/ dt = k (𝑇 − 70).
(ii) If T= 85F find the value of K. and t.

this optimal value must occur at a corner points (vertex) of the feasible region.
(i) The corner points of the feasible region determined by the system of linear constraints are
(0,0),(0,40),(20,40),(60,20),(60,0). The objective function is Z=4x+3y compare the quantity in
column A and B

Column A Column B

(ii) What do you understand by optimal solution

5 Shown below is the feasible region of a linear programming problem(LPP) whose objective
function is maximize Z = x + y Sarla claimed

that there exists no optimal solution for the

LPP as there is no unique maximum value at the

corner points of its feasible region.

Is her claim true? Give a valid reason.

ANSWER KEY

1 (i) Z=10x+4y
(ii) 4x+y ≥ 80
(iii) 2x + y ≥ 60
(iv) x=10 and y=40
2. (i) Max Z=12 at (4,0) & Min Z=-32 at (0,8)
(ii) p=q
3 (i) 2x + 5y ≤ 100, 8x + 5y ≤ 200, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0

(ii)

(iii) Max Z=30 At x=50/3 and y=40/3

4 (i) The quantity in column B is greater
(ii) The optimum solution is the best possible result you can get (either the most or the least) when
considering the limitations (constraints) of the problem. This best result will always be found at one
of the corners of the allowed area.
5 Writes that Sarla's claim is false. Gives a reason. For example, every point on the
line joining ( 2/3,7/3) and (2, 1) gives the maximum value of Z which is 3. Hence, any
point on the line joining ( 2/3,7/3) and (2, 1) is an optimal solution
Chapter 12 : Probability
1 Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
An electric circuit includes a device that gives energy to the charged particles constituting
the current, such as a battery or a generator;
devices that use current, such as lamps,
electric motors, or computers; and the
connecting wires or transmission lines.An
electric circuit consists of two subsystems say
A and B as shown below:
For previous testing procedures, the following
probabilities are assumed to be known.
P(A fails) = 0.2, P(B fails alone) = 0.15, P(A and B fail) =
0.15

(a) What is the probability that B fails?
(b) What is the probability that A fails alone?
(c) Find the probability that the whole of the electric system fails?
OR
Find the conditional probability that B fails when A has already failed.
2 The reliability of a COVID 19 test is specified as follows:
Of people having COVID 19, 90% of the test detect the disease but 10% go undetected. Of
people free of COVID 19, 99% of the test are
judged COVID 19 negative but 1% are
diagnosed as showing COVID 19 positive. From
a large population of which only 0.1% have
COVID 19, one person is selected at
random, given the COVID19 test, and the
pathologist reports him/her as COVID 19
positive.
(i) What is the probability of the ‘person to be tested as COVID 19 positive’ given that ‘he is
actually having COVID 19’ and What is the probability of the ‘person to be tested as COVID
19 positive’ given that ‘he is actually not having COVID 19’?
(ii) What is the probability that the ‘person is actually not having COVID 19’?
(iii) What is the probability that the ‘person is actually having COVID 19’ given that ‘he is
tested as COVID 19 positive’?
OR
(iii) What is the probability that the ‘person selected will be diagnosed as COVID 19
positive’?
3 Recent studies suggest that roughly 12% of the world population is left-handed.
Depending upon the
parents, the chances of
having a left handed child
are as follows:

A : When both father and mother are left handed: Chances of left handed child is 24%.
B : When father is right handed and mother is left handed: Chances of left handed child is
22%.
C : When father is left handed and mother is right handed: Chances of left handed child is
17%.
D : When both father and mother are right handed: Chances of left handed child is 9%.
Assuming that P(A) = P(B) = P(C) = P(D) = 1/4 and L denotes the event that child is left
handed.

His daily income Y (in ₹) is given by :
Y = 800X + 50
On the basis of the above information, answer the following questions :
(i) Find the value of k.
(ii) Evaluate P(X ≥ 3).
(iii) (a) Calculate the expected weekly income of the salesman assuming he works five days
per week. OR
(iii) (b) Calculate the expected weekly income of the salesman assuming he works only for
three days of the week.
5 Mahindra Tractors is India’s leading farm equipment
manufacturer. It is the largest tractor selling factory in the
world. This factory has two machine A and B. Past record
shows that machine A produced 60% and machine B
produced 40% of the output(tractors). Further 2% of the
tractors produced by machine A and 1% produced by
machine B were defective. All the tractors are put into one
big store hall and one tractor is chosen at random.
(i) Find the total probability of chosen tractor (at random) is defective
(ii) If in random choosing, chosen tractor is defective, then find the probability that the chosen
tractor is produced by machine ‘B’
6 Let d1, d2, d3 be three mutually exclusive diseases.
Let S = {S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6} be the set of observable symptoms of these diseases. For
example, S1 is the shortness of breath, S2 is the loss of weight, S3 is the fatigue, etc. Suppose
a random sample of 10,000 patients contains 3200 patients with disease d1, 3500 patients
with disease d2, and 3300 patients with disease d3. Also, 3100 patients with disease d1, 3300
patients with disease d2, and 3000 patients with disease d3 show the symptom S.
Based on the above information answer
the following questions:
(a) A person is chosen at random from the
sample of 10,000. What is The probability
that the person chosen does not suffer from
disease d3?
(b) Find the conditional probability that the patient shows the symptom S given that he suffers
from disease d1 and also calculate the conditional probability that the patient shows the
symptom S given that he suffers from disease d2.
OR
If a person chosen at random shows the symptom S, then what is the probability that he does
suffer from disease d1?

7 In a town, it’s rainy one-third of the day. Given that it is rainy, there will be heavy traffic with
probability 1/2. Given that it is not rainy, there will be heavy
traffic with probability 1/4. If it’s rainy and there is heavy
traffic, I arrive late for work with probability 1/2. On the
other hand, the probability of being late is reduced to 1/8 if
it, is not rainy and there is no heavy traffic. In other situations
(rainy and no heavy traffic, net rainy and heavy traffic), the probability of being late is 1/4.
You pick a random day. Based on the above information, answer the following questions:
(i) What is the probability that it’s not raining and there is heavy traffic and I am not late?
(ii) What is the probability that I am late?
(iii) Given that I arrived late at work, what is the probability that it rained that day?
