AMACT Midterm Forum I
1. Discuss briefly on why nations keep art.
In my perspective, certain nations preserve their local artistic compositions
because they contribute to the enrichment of their historical and cultural background. By
way of elucidation, with respect to the former, such compositions serve as crucial
sources in determining and understanding the historical events and customs which
contributed to the existing national identity of such nations. On the other hand, with
regard to the latter, such compositions also manifest the national views, beliefs, and
practices that such nations wholeheartedly value and incorporate up to the present time.
Significantly, it can be stated that without the preservation of art, certain nations will be
considered as “underdeveloped” due to lack of national identity. In simpler terms, art is
the essence of a national identity which, subsequently, provides an essence to a
particular nation.
2. Write down five (5) ideas or interpretations about the acrylic on canvas by
Agatha Brenica Ilagan.
Based on my observation about the highlighted artwork, I have grasped five (5)
insights about it. Firstly, it has precisely incorporated the element of value. It is evident
that the edges of the artwork, as well as the figures, are dark and the central portion is
light. Perhaps, this element is incorporated by the artist to emphasize the setting of the
artwork, that is, during the evening. Secondly, the subjects shown in the artwork include
the man, dog, moon, grasses, and a tree. Subsequently, these subjects led me to
formulate my third insight, which accentuates on the content of the artwork. As strongly
emphasized by the subjects, it is probable that the artwork depicts a rural life. Fourthly,
due to the incorporated element of value, the conspicuous colors of the artwork are only
black and white. Nonetheless, it strongly emphasizes the theme of solitude. And fifthly,
regarding the symbolisms, there are three (3): the man and the dog likely symbolizes us
who embark through the course of life; the darkness that surround the environment tend
to symbolize certain hindrances or uncertainties in life; and the moon, as emphasized
by its size, symbolizes the “light” that guides us in the midst of our hindrances, which
include our dreams, the people we love, and our personal morality.
