Setting up the PC, RFD, and Well
1 Prior to starting any NISE Control job both PC’s should be updated to the latest PRODUCTION
software; and files synchronized with the Noralis® Data Hub. See Noralis NISE Control User
Manual for more details.

2 Identify the PC/Tablet which will be connected to the NPD. This is the Primary PC.

3 Connect the NPD to the PC/Tablet Display.

4 Launch NISE Control and click the Change Well/Role button found on the tool bar.

5 A wizard will launch designed to help the user easily navigate different starting configurations.

6 For this section, we will assume the PC performing decoding is on the rig floor.

7 Click Start/New.
Note: This guide assumes the user wants to Share to the Data Hub from the Trailer PC (The Primary
PC/Tablet on the Rig Floor will not have internet access).
8 Type in the user’s name (Or “Rig Floor PC”) and click Start Action.

9 NISE Control will ask if it should perform a database back up.

10 The software will ask if it should erase the current database. Select Yes.

11 A New Well screen will pop up. It’s important to type in the Well Name.
Note: Additional information can be filled out now or filled out later. For Rig Floor PC’s which are
touch-screen it’s often easier to type in the information after the Trailer PC has been connected
to the database. The Well Features can be changed to show/hide additional fields. Tabs on the
left-hand side show more fields to fill in.

12 After clicking Save, a new run screen will pop up. Details can be filled out now or later. Click
Save.
13 The software should restart.

14 After software restart. From the MENU Bar click the Options →Well DB Setup.

15 Record the IP Address found in the Server IP Address.

16 Identify the MWD Trailer PC and Launch NISE Control

17 Click the Change Well/Role button found on the Tool Bar. The same Wizard will appear.

18 For the MWD Trailer PC, select Connect.

Note: Sharing with the Data Hub will cost a small amount of $$ on a per day basis.

19 Type in the name or “MWD Trailer” and click Start Action.

20 The software will prompt for an IP address, type in the IP address recorded from the
Tablet/Primary PC.
21 NISE Control will ask if it should perform a database back up.

22 Click Yes when prompted if NISE should erase the user’s data on this PC.

23 The software will restart.

24 To share well with Hub, click Options → Well Db Sharing → Check Upload your Well to the
Noralis Data Hub → Click OK.
Alternative Route: To configure NISE Control to Monitor Locally Share with Hub,
from the Change Well/Role window click Advanced → Monitor → Control Locally
Share with Data Hub.

25 When Prompted with a Hub Error, click Register this Well on the Hub.

26 The software should prompt for a user name and password. Enter credentials and hit OK.

27 The software will ask which team to share the well with. It’s important to select the appropriate
team. Most users will be sharing to the team labeled “share XXX” where XXX = your companies
name.
28 A pop up should say access granted.

29 If the NPD HASP is missing Hub Credit, this pop up will occur. The HASP will need to be
recharged with appropriate credit to get the data up to the Noralis® Hub.

30 Send a test message in the Message Log to verify both systems are properly communicating.

31 After confirming communication between MWD Trailer PC and Rig Floor PC, click EDIT WELL
button in the Tool Bar and fill in remaining Well Information.
Importing the Config File
If the MWD config file that is to be used is a shared config, skip to step 5.

1 On the MWD Trailer PC, Drag/Drop the appropriate configuration file anywhere onto the Noralis
Software.

2 The software should pop up a qualification window. In this case the file is valid. Note the [1]
indicates a file with this name already exists in the database and the file just dragged in will have
a [1] at the end of the name.
3 If the software pops up a failed verification it may be caused by the software using an
unintended Tool Features File or there is something wrong with the file.

Tool Features Files are intended to validate and prevent incompatible MWD configuration files
getting programmed to Noralis® downhole tools.

Example: NISE Control supports decoding the mnemonic “RotW” in combination with Dynamic
Sequencing. NDM tools prior to F/W Version 2.04.00 do not support RotW or Dynamic
Sequencing.
In this example the Tool Features Files “NDM Tool V2” will not validate a config containing RotW
in a TSQ string.
NISE Control will not allow an invalid configuration file to be saved to a run, nor will it allow an
invalid config file to be programmed to a NDM tool.

4 If the software pops up an invalid verification the tool features file should be modified the user
should click the “Edit Run” button.
5 Navigate to the MWD Tab. Note this file is considered not compatible for a NDM Tool. Select
the Tool Features Drop down and change it.

6 After changing the Tool Features File the file is accepted. Click Save.

7 The software will return to the main screen.

Programming the Tool
1 Connect the MWD Trailer PC to the Tool using the NTI cable. Select the communication button
from the Tool Bar. Alternatively, can use the menu Noralis Tool>Display Diagnostics.

Updating data means the Tool is on and working. Check the voltage in the bottom right corner.
27 volts if on battery power and not 10-11 volts. (NTI cable provides 10-11 volts).

2 Close the Diagnostic Dashboard window.

3 Select the PRE-RUN TOOL SETUP button found in the Tool Bar.

4 The software may ask about data existing in the tool’s memory. Click Erase.

Note: If not sure that memory was saved, click the POST RUN TOOL DUMP button
5 Enter credentials when prompted.

Note: If the PC being used is not online you will not be asked to log in. The NISE software will “queue”
up the data files for the next time it touches the internet.
Any time a tool is programmed NISE Control automatically uploads the config file and
calibration file used to the HUB.
It is recommended to connect the PC to an internet source prior to programming.

6 Select the MWD File or config file that is to be sent to the tool.

7 The Proceed with Setup window will appear listing the steps that will carried out during the
setup. Click Continue.
8 The process will take a few minutes, once it’s finished you will see this prompt.

9 Click OK. Notice the NDM Tool button is Red. This is normal.

10 Set the MWD tool string to the intended high-side orientation.

11 Click the SET TFO button in the Tool Bar.

12 In the TFO Dashboard, note the current Gravity Toolface (GTF) orientation and current TFO that
is being applied.
13 Click the Set Gravity Toolface to Zero button.

14 After clicking the button, the GTF will be zeroed and the applied TFO will change to the new
value.

15 The window can be printed or saved as an html file for proof of TFO setting. Click the close
button when finished.

Note: The Save button is not related to saving the TFO. The TFO is saved to the tool when the button is
clicked. The Save button will save the tables to an HTML file that can easily be stored in a job
folder.
16 Click the Roll Test button in the Tool Bar.

17 A window will display asking the user to define the name and location where the roll test results
should be saved. Click save after selecting the appropriate location.

18 Review the Roll Test Wizard display that is now open and showing live data.

19 Orientate the tool to the target parameters. Click the Take Shot button.

20 Wait for the yellow target area to move before changing the orientation of the tool.

21 Continue the process for all orientations.

22 When the test is complete, a notification window will appear. Click Test is Complete button.

23 An html file will open with the roll test results. The browser window, tables in NISE Control, and
the Roll Test Wizard window can be closed. The Roll Test is complete.

24 Select the Flow Test button in the TOOL button group to begin.
25 Software will pop up a warning letting the user know the NPD will be disconnected and the NTI
cable will be driving the flow input to NISE software. Click Yes.

26 The software will begin a new run based upon the configuration of an existing run in the
database. Select the same run which was used in the PRE-RUN TOOL SETUP.

27 The software will restart. A new run will be created labeled “XXX- Flow Test” where XXX is the
previous runs name.
Note: If running the Flow Test from the MWD Trailer PC the Rig Floor PC will physically restart. The
Trailer PC will then reconnect to the Rig Floor PC in Flow Test Mode.

28 In the bottom task-bar the “Toggle Flow” and “Toggle Rotation” buttons will be visible. In
addition, the FLOW TEST Button will be highlighted green.

Note: Toggle Rotation will not be available if the MWD Config File does not have Dynamic Sequencing
enabled.
29 Users should click “Toggle Flow” in the bottom task bar. A message will pop up in the message
log and the flow button should illuminate Green.

30 The tool will begin pulsing after the TXDT delay as it would normally down-hole.

31 It is recommended to check the MWD Data Table and validate the data decodes correctly and
looks appropriate.

32 It is also recommended to let the tool proceed through an entire SSQ and TSQ loop before
finishing the FLOW TEST. If running dynamic sequencing, verify the tool switches states
appropriately with the “Toggle Rotation” button.

33 To finish the flow test, toggle both the Flow and Rotation button (if applicable) to Off.

34 Click the Green FLOW TEST button in the Tool Bar to exit the Flow Test Run and return to the
main run.

35 The software will restart. The Flow Test is finished. The user may disconnect the NTI Cable.

Note: Noralis® uses proprietary commands to turn flow and rotation on and off. Once the tool cable is
disconnected NDM tools will automatically turn both Flow and Rotation Off after 2 minutes.
Note: If wanting to immediately perform a Tap test after the Flow Test, disconnect the NDM cable first
and wait 2 minutes.
Setting up WITS
1 Click the WITS FILES button on the Tool Bar, or Menu Bar WITS → Edit WITS Features File.

2 Using the WITS File drop down, select a shared WITS Features File that contains the fields
necessary.
The fields are populated on the left in the working pane. Attention is needed when selecting
which file to start with. Note that sending variables like shock and vibe, generic variables, or raw
data will require a different base feature file. Not all fields are available in different feature files.

3 On the Receive WITS Pg 1 and Pg 2, enter the WITS ID of the incoming variables. The incoming
WITS IDs should be available from the EDR system’s outgoing listing.
If applicable, continue checking WITS IDs for the outgoing data and modify accordingly. The
outgoing WITS IDs should be found in the EDR system’s incoming ID listing.

4 After completing all modifications, click the Save button or Save to Well button if applicable
which will set the new modified WITS Features File as active.

5 Enter an easily identifiable name for the modified WITS Features File to be saved as.
The new WITS Feature File will be a locally saved file and only availalble on the working copy of
software. To share to other member of a team, the WITS Feature File must be shared.
6 Verify the PC is correctly setup to communicate with the EDR system by clicking Options → EDR
WITS from the menu bar.

7 Enable WITS by toggling the checkbox.

8 Enable View on Tool Bar for quick visual reference on the WITS status.
If properly communicating, the WITS status bar button will be green indicating two way
communitcation or yellow indicating one way communitcation. The status bar button will turn
red after 5 seconds of no communication.

9 Select the proper WITS Communication port in the drop down.

Pro Tip: Prior to plugging in the WITS cable, open Options → EDR WITS and note the
COM ports available in the drop down selection. Close the Options window,
plug in the WITS Cable and re-open the Options>EDR WITS. The new COM port
in the listing is the port which should be selected.
10 Enable the EDR specific pings and heartbeats if applicable by toggling the checkbox.

11 Click OK to save the settings.

12 Verify the NISE is communicating with the EDR system by going to the Menu Bar and clicking
View → Wits1 Communication.

13 In the communication window that is opened, watch for directional traffic:

Lines with a > symbol are outgoing from NISE
Lines with a < symbol are incoming from EDR

Alternate Way: To verify WITS communication, Rightclick WITS → Send Test

Packet to WITS. This functionality sends a WITS out packet to verify
communication.
Performing a POST RUN TOOL DUMP
To perform a post- run tool dump:

1 While connected to the tool using the NTI, click the POST-RUN TOOL DUMP button on the tool
bar.

Note: Post-Run Tool Dump will execute Data Pack script based on Data Pack Default settings, see section
Error! Reference source not found.Error! Reference source not found.

2 The user will be asked to select the location destination for the memory files. Select the location
and click the Save button in the window.

3 After saving, the user will be asked if they choose to import the tool dump into the database.
Select one of the following options:
Yes – Time based memory files downloaded to the location specified in step 5 and will also be
imported into the well database. Data will be depth tagged in the well database if depth was
captured in the database during the memory data collection time frame.
No – The time based memory files will be downloaded to the location specified.

4 A window will appear asking the user to select the time zone that was used when programming
the tool (regarding the last programming that the memory is associated with). Select the time
zone and click OK.

5 A Proceed with Tool Dump window will appear with details regarding the actions that will take
place when moving forward. Click Continue.
6 Enter the credentials when prompted. The credentials are needed to determine which team the
data should be shared with.

7 An Edit Run will window will appear. When importing memory data to the database, NISE will
create a run titled MEMORY Log [Year-Month-Time]. Click Save button at the bottom of the Edit
Run window.

8 The memory download status bars begin to populate as the download commences and a
Lifetime Data table will be displayed.
The Lifetime Data table will show Bit Run Data (exposure hours in temp and shock buckets since
the tool was last programmed) and Tool Lifetime Data (exposure hours in temp and shock
buckets since the tool’s creation)
Everytime a PRE-RUN SETUP is performed the Bit Run Data (the “trip odometer”) is zeroed out.
POST-RUN TOOL DUMP does NOT zero out the bit run data.

9 A window will appear showing completion of the Post-Run Tool Dump process. Click OK and
close out the windows and tables that were populated during the process.
Starting a New Run
1 After a run has finished it is important to start a new run. Even if the configuration file remains
the same starting a new run in the database will help break up the data to graph/log.

2 If using the same BHA and same MWD Config file, right click the Start New Run button and select
Copy Run.

3 The software will prompt if it should copy an existing run. Select Yes.

4 The software will ask which run should be copied. Select Run and click OK.

5 The software will create a new copy of that run. Re-name the run to the appropriate run
number and verify the information in the tabs is correct. Select “Active Run” to make this new
run active.
Note: Making a new run active means two things:
• All New Data will be put in this run as soon as the Save button is clicked (WITS Data, Pressure
Data, etc.).
• If actively decoding, creating a new run even with the same MWD Configuration File will stop
decoding while the new decoders activate. It’s important to not do this while actively decoding.
Note: It’s important to make the new run as soon as possible after running in hole. The software allows
“moving” data between runs but it is much better to start the new run before shallow hole test.

If a user needs to create a new run from scratch they can simply click the “Start New Run”
button

6 Review the new run, updating the new survey and gamma depth offsets. Change the gamma
calibration value if required.
