1 What is a habitat ?

Answer: The place where organisms live is called habitat.

2 What do you mean by adaptation?

Answer

The presence of specific features or certain habits which enable an organism to live naturally in a
place is called adaptation .

3 Write two adaptations of trees in the mountain habitat.

Answer

I The trees are normally cone shaped.

Ii The leaves of some trees are needle like.

4 What is respiration?

Answer

Respiration is the break down of food to release energy.Organisms respire to obtain energy.

5 Define stimulus.

Answer

Any change in the environment that generates a response in an organism is called as stimulus.
6 Classify the following habitats into terrestrial and aquatic types.

Grassland,Pond,Ocean,Rice field.

Answer

Terrestrial habitats_grassland,rice field

Aquatic habitats_ pond,ocean

7 Why is reproduction important to organisms?

Answer

Reproduction leads to the production of more individuals of an organism.

1 What are the specific features present in a deer that helps it to detect the presence of
predators like lion?

Answer

(i) Long ears to hear movement of predators.


(ii) Eyes on the sides of its head which allow it to look in all directions.
(iii) The speed of the deer helps them to run away from the predators.

2 How is cactus adapted to survive in a desert?

Answer

(i) Roots are long and go deep into soil to absorb water.
(ii) Leaves are reduced to spines to reduce rate of transpiration.
(iii) Stems carry out photosynthesis.

3 Differentiate between Biotic and Abiotic components.

Answer

Biotic components: The living organisms of an environment are called as biotic components.

Eg: Plants ,animals, micro organisms.

A biotic components: The non living things present in the environment.

Eg: Sunlight, rainfall, wind ,soil etc.


4 What is excretion ?
Answer
(i)Excretion is the process of elimination of nitrogenous waste from the body.
(ii) Wastes are produced as a result of various metabolic process in the body.
(iii)T hey are toxic to the organism and needs to be eliminated.

5 How is a fish adapted to live in water.


Answer
(i)They have streamlined body to move easily in water.
(ii) They have gills to breathe and fins to move.
(iii)They have slippery scales to protect the body and also help in swimming.

1 How do you characterize a living thing?

Answer

Living things are those which have life. The different features that characterize a living thing is;

(i) All living things need food and nutrients for survival.
(ii) All living things respire to obtain energy from the food.
(iii) All living things respond to stimuli.
(iv) All living things reproduce.
(v) All living things exhibit movement.
(vi) Living things grow and die.

2 How is a camel adapted to its habitat?

Answer

(i) Camel has long legs to keep its body away from the hot sand.
(ii) The hooves are broad to allow them to walk easily on sand.
(iii) They excrete small amount of urine and dry dung .
(iv) They also have a hump that can store reserve food which help them to survive in
deserts for a long time.
