2. PRESENTATION
2.1 INTRODUCTION

The goals of this document are multiple:

- To give some guidelines to follow during the acquisition process in order to obtain fingerprints with the best
quality possible.
Before using MorphoTop sensors, it is fundamental to know how to use them and how to proceed during the
acquisition with the user. This document describes how to capture correct fingerprints by specifying best
practices with MorphoTop devices. First, an acquisition protocol is defined to precise how to prepare the
sensor and help the user interacting with the sensor during the acquisition process. Best fingerprints occur
when you put fingers on the platen in a good position with a correct pressure.

- To configure the used laptop in order to have the best performances on acquisition process. MorphoTop
software needs a certain amount of free CPU load to work properly. We strongly advise to configure the
laptops in that perspective. One paragraph will be dedicated on best practices to book CPU load for
Morphotop Software.

3. ACQUISITION PROTOCOL WITH MORPHOTOP SENSORS

3.1 SENSOR USE

First of all, make sure that the sensor is well placed in order to give room to the user to allow him
to manipulate device:

1. Give access to the sensor so that the user is able to stand up in front of it.

2. Place the sensor in a horizontal way.

3. Ideal height for acquisition is elbow height. A study shows that best results in terms of image quality are
obtained with a sensor placed at a work surface height between 26 and 32 inches .

4. Place the sensor far from any strong illumination source.

5. Make sure that the sensor is correctly fixed in order to prevent any of its movements during the acquisition.

The next important step is switching on the MorphoTop device:

7. Clean the acquisition surface of the sensor before the product switches on (clean while MorphoTop is
unplugged from the computer).

8. There are two ways to proceed for plugging in the MorphoTop device:
Before booting the PC, plug in the MorphoTop. Boot the PC and wait for the device to become green.
Once the device is green, launch the Aadhaar client application.
If the PC is already on, close the Aadhaar client application and then plug in the MorphoTop device.
When device becomes green, relaunch Aadhaar client application.

Note: Do not put the hand on the sensor when MorphoTop is switching on (when plugging in the
device).

Cleaning sensor

9. Clean the acquisition surface after every enrollment for best results and hygienic reasons. Before every
enrollment make sure that fingers are clean. If not:
Clean hands with soap and water
Dry hands with clean towel

10. Provide dry soft tissue. Wipe the fingers if they are wet or sweaty (cf. Figure 1). Do not over clean or
wipe fingers as it may make the finger too dry.

Figure 1: Wet Finger

11. Provide humidifying pads. The pads that are currently used with MorphoTop devices are the PreScan
fingerprint enhancer manufactured by Identicator. For more information on the humidifying pad see chapter 4.
Moisten the fingers if they are too dry or cold (cf. Figure 2). If no pads are available, humidify your fingers by
breathing out on them (as if you were cleaning your glasses).
The use of a humid sponge is not recommended as it will over wet the finger and result in bad images.

3.2 ACQUISITION PROCESS

During all the acquisition process, it is advised not to move the body. Before placing the hand on the
sensor, do not clean or wipe hands (unless your fingers are wet or sweaty). The operator should
communicate and guide the user. If necessary, the operator can physically guide the user.

1. Stand up in front of the sensor.

Note: At this point, the user must be warned of the beginning of the acquisition procedure; and the slap or the
thumbprint(s) to be acquired has to be mentioned.

2. Direct the required hand (for a right/left slap) or thumb(s) (for individual or simultaneous thumbprint)
vertically toward the sensor. The direction of the hand movement must be perpendicular to the sensor acquisition
surface (cf. Figure 3).

Note: Direct the hand obliquely toward the sensor and pressing on it in an oblique way causes distortion
(cf.Figure 4).

3. Place the hand or thumb(s) correctly on the sensor (cf. Figure 5 & Figure 6).

Use the live feedback in the Aadhaar client application to adjust hand position. If parts of the fingers don’t appear
in the live feedback (Figure 7), remove the hand and repeat the process. All fingers must be visible in the live
feedback window.

Figure7: Adjust hand position and repeat

process because a part of the finger is not
visible.

Note: The term “correctly” refers to the following recommendations:

- Set down the fingers flat on the sensor and in particular their tips (but do not set down only the tips (cf. Figure
8) or the sides of the fingers (cf. Figure 9))

- Position the fingers straight, parallel to the edges of the sensor (cf. Figure 10) and avoid any rotation
(unless a rotation is the only way to capture all fingers correctly) (cf. Figure 11)

Figure 10: Parallel fingers in relation to the edges Figure 11: Rotated fingers in relation to the edges

- Put down all the fingers simultaneously on the sensor (do not roll them on the sensor or do not put
down one finger after the other on the sensor for instance)

- Do not spread fingers too much (cf. Figure 12), but do not leave them joined either (cf. Figure 13)

Best practice guide

- Do not cross fingers (cf. Figure 14)

Figure 14: Crossed fingers

- Center the hand or the thumb(s) on the sensor acquisition surface

- Do not position the fingers on the borders of the sensor acquisition surface in order to avoid cutting
a part of the slap (cf. Figure 15)

Figure 15: Mind the borders of the sensor

- Position the fingers on the sensor in order to have a good long surface for the print, i.e. use up the
acquisition surface with the fingers as much as possible

4. Apply hand on the sensor for the acquisition but do not over-press (otherwise resulting images become too
dark). Leave the hand on the sensor to warm up the sensor screen.

5. Leave the hand or the thumb(s) on the sensor until the validation of the acquisition by the operator. After 5s if
no image is taken, apply a light pressure and gradually raise the pressure until you receive a validation.

Note: It is important to gradually raise the pressure to let the sensor adapt itself to such changes. Placing
a hand on the sensor and immediately pressing hard will result in bad quality image.

6. Do not move the hand or the thumb(s) during the acquisition. After the image acquisition, the image preview
shown on Aadhaar should resemble to figure16. The hand is in the center of the screen and fingerprints are not
too dark figure1 and not too clear figure2.

The whole finger appears from

the top to the bottom. It is not too
dark figure1 and not too clear
figure2.

the screen.

7. Follow the instructions given by the sensor or the application to change the hand or the thumb(s) for the next
acquisition or ending the process.

4. HUMIDIFYING PAD
4.1 INTRODUCTION

The humidifying pad currently used by Morpho is the PreScan fingerprint enhancer, manufactured by Identificator
(www.identificatorinc.com). The humidifying pad allows easy capture for dry fingerprints, thus reducing the
capture time. It is not to be systematically used, it is destined for people having dry fingerprint. Most people
having normal fingerprint do not require the use of the pad.

4.2 UTILIZATION

1. Simultaneously press the four fingers of the left hand against the pad surface.

2. Repeat step 1 for the right hand.

3. Separate the fingers slightly and rub the finger tips back and forth against the opposite hand, distributing
the PreScan solution evenly across all areas of the finger tips

4. Roll each thumb individually across the pad.

5. Place the fingers as usual on the MorphoTop sensor for capture.

The rest of the acquisition process doesn’t change, refer to chapter 3.2 for explanation.

5. PC / LAPTOP CONFIGURATION

Current version of MorphoTop VDM software (package 0.2.9) needs about 65% of CPU load to work
properly (Micro processor must be, at least, a Core2Duo).. Morpho strongly advises to optimize CPU use
on every used laptop:.

o Deactivation of useless Windows services

 Avoid / deactivate Windows services which are automatically launched after any reboot and
which are not necessary. For example, an antivirus must not launch a systematic scan at
reboot.

 That may impact the original configuration of laptops, received from vendor. In some cases,
when there are too many pre-installed running services (which are not needful), it may be
necessary to build a common master installation and deploy it on the whole laptop park.

o While enrolling

 Check there are no useless applications/processes which are running in parallel. Particularly
close applications which are not mandatory but take much UC load (more than 10%).

 Do not plug any USB device which is not needed for the enrolment process. Regarding USB
devices, our recommended configuration is: iris device + 1 webcam + MorphoTop device +
printer + mouse + keyboard.

o Sleep mode deactivation

 Morpho advises to deactivate Sleep mode, on the whole Laptop Park. That will prevent from
recurrent issues when back from Sleep mode: such as “Device is not recognized”,
“Acquisitions are very slow”.
