Though the home is sprawling in nature,
it’s still very aesthetically cohesive. This is
because of the design team’s very considered

Though the house looks e΍ortlessly

impeccable at ȴrst glance, the completion of
the project was not without its challenges.
Anyone who attempted a reno or upgrade
during Covid would remember the diɝculties
the situation presented. From lockdowns
that halted construction to a lack of materials
due to import delays, the team at MAK Urban
Group experienced it all when completing
this project. However, the fact that they
completed the project to this quality, with
only minor changes made to accommodate
material shortages, is a testament to the
team’s skills and experience.

Rather than starting the whole deal

and a walk-in commercial-grade cool room, it

The culinary space also includes a butler’s
pantry, with fresh mint cabinets that lend a
subtle quirkiness while pairing beautifully
with the reeded glass in the overhead
shelving and sliding door.
There’s so much to love about this kitchen,
but the breathtaking Aquamarine Quartzite
components likely take the cake. The
homeowners were completely enamoured
with this surface, so it became the genesis
for their family home’s reimagination.
Aquamarine Quartzite was integrated into
the impressive 5.5m-long dual-level island
benchtop as well as the kitchen’s splashback,
creating a sense of cohesion within the
space. This surface’s tonality inspired the
emergence of soft blush tones – muted
pinks, mints, glacial blues and smokey oak –
which paired beautifully alongside an array
of contemporary Aboriginal paintings and
sculptures placed throughout the interior.
The end result is a beautiful family
abode that exudes the modern-day spirit
of its homeland.

TILES
When building your new dream home
or refurbishing your existing one, the
tiles you choose, and where and how
they are laid, impacts the overall look
and feel of your home’s interior
words carrol baker

TYPES OF TILES
There are three main types of tiles: ceramic,
porcelain and stone. Each has strong selling
points and it’s up to you to decide which
one will best service your needs. Michelle
Kearney, product specialist at Beaumont
Tiles, says glazed ceramic tiles have a number
of beneȴ ts such as being low maintenance,
stain and water resistant, and being easy to
clean. “It is important to be especially careful
with ceramic tiles in the installation process
as they chip more easily if they are not
handled with love and care,” she notes.
Porcelain tiles are a popular and versatile
option. Michelle points out they are a type
of ceramic that is hardier and denser than
other tiles. “But they can be a little less DIY
friendly than other tile materials and may
require a professional tiler to install them
properly,” she explains.
The beauty of natural stone is always a
drawcard for those wanting a bespoke tile as
no two tiles are the same. “One diɝculty with
this material is that it can be a little harder
to maintain as it may need to be regularly
sealed to ensure it remains stain resistant,”
she points out.

was designed to show o΍ the more playful and colourful

clever design and high-quality surfaces and products.
Staron Solid Surfaces, primarily in the very popular

Surfaces were the perfect choice for this kitchen that’s full of
seamless curves. Manufactured from reȴned bauxite, a safe
silica-free mineral, and blended with pure acrylic resin, this
surface is known for being high-performing. Thanks to its
non-porous nature, Staron is both stain-resistant and easy
to clean – perfect for frequently used areas of the kitchen.
The Bologna Terrazzo is eye-catching on the multi-

deep burnt ochre and dusty pink hues as well as the
Tasmanian oak timber that appears throughout. This labour-
intensive benchtop was carefully crafted by the SpaceCraft
Joinery workshop team to create an area that comfortably
seats four. This gorgeous surface also appears throughout
the kitchen in the form of open shelving and custom-
made plant pots. That’s right, Staron Solid Surfaces are so
versatile they can be used to create the extraordinary.
This kitchen highlights the fact that good things can come

A conscious collaboration of ideas between the home-

owners and designer, the gorgeous bathrooms and
laundry you see here were updated as part of a whole-
of-house refresh within a classic 1880s cottage. The
homeowners loved all things Scandi and were keen on
custom joinery and brass accents for their main bathroom
and master ensuite. These three things were worked into
the design to create a romantic and charming aesthetic
within both bathroom spaces.
The master ensuite and main bathroom both showcase
a curved American oak vanity with matching detail on the
Caesarstone surfaces. The brass tapware and matching
shower collections from Greens Tapware complemented
the brass accents that appear throughout the home. The

modern touch is the waterfall edges on the island. Crafted

space while maintaining the contrasting theme.
A Smeg double oven built into the joinery to the right

breaks up the mass of Smartstone serving as the splashback.
As a new build, this kitchen design didn’t require

ȵooring to create a bold visual statement, creating the
perfect balance to prevent the space from feeling overly
dark. The use of large windows and glass sliding doors
not only brings in natural light, but also creates a smooth
transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, extending
the living area and reinforcing a connection with nature.
The open-plan layout was designed to create seamless
ȵow between the kitchen, dining and living areas. This
design choice maximises the utility of space while
promoting social interaction. To further maximise space
and maintain clean lines, custom joinery was used
throughout the kitchen and living areas. Integrated storage
solutions and built-in appliances ensure functionality
without compromising appearances.
This calibre of style and quality is very much the norm
for Art Decoline projects. Whether you approach the
team for help with a DA/CDC package, interior design,
commercial ȴ tout, kitchen reno, bathroom reno or pool

knowing you’ll have experts on your side who will work
hard to help bring your vision to life.

This kitchen has undergone an incredible transformation

from its original 1920s laminate iteration. The homeowner’s
vision for a modern, functional and sophisticated culinary
space breathed new life into this historic gem.
The journey began with a bold move by breaking down
barriers – literally. By removing a doorway and pulling out
a wall to expand the kitchen space, making way for a stylish
breakfast bar, the stage was set for a modern culinary oasis
with an open and airy atmosphere that fosters connectivity
and ȵow throughout.
A daring choice was made of matt black cabinetry that
instantly infuses the space with contemporary ȵair and is
juxtaposed beautifully against the crisp white countertops
and a playful marble herringbone splashback. The result
is a harmonious blend of sophistication and comfort that
feels inviting and welcoming.
Open shelving in a matching timber ȵooring hue was
integrated to counterbalance the darkness of the cabinetry,
creating a sense of balance and harmony that permeates the
entire space. The kitchen’s sleek appliances are the cherry
on top, adding to the room’s aesthetic appeal and enhancing
its character. It’s the little details that make all the di΍erence.
The end result is a remarkable transformation of a
once-dated kitchen into a functional space that embodies
modernity while retaining a timeless allure.

they got in touch with Dezign Kitchens for help. They were
uncertain how to get the most out of the tricky angular
kitchen space in a way that would create more storage and
functionality and add to the home’s aesthetic appeal.
The Dezign Kitchens team got to work, creating a
kitchen that expertly blends the past and the present
through a considered fusion of modern design and period
features. A complete redesign of the space was required,
but it was well worth it. The homeowners were adamant
they did not want the room overloaded with cabinets, but
they did require plentiful storage. Clean, contemporary
cabinetry was chosen to meet the brief. While they do not

A Fisher & Paykel Integrated CoolDrawer™ was included

minimum while not compromising on functionality. While
the positioning and size of the windows were challenging

This kitchen renovation was not your average upgrade.

On the contrary, it involved removing the original
room’s corrugated iron ceiling, stripping out the old
kitchen, putting in a new ceiling and building the kitchen
from scratch. The silver lining was that the room was
essentially a blank canvas, so the designer was able to
create a space that perfectly suited the homeowners

The room’s Shaker proȴle, as well as the pillars around the

colour palette was kept light to ensure the kitchen is bright
and inviting. The bifold doors allow plentiful natural light to
seep into the room, accentuating its airy ambience while
also providing easy access to the back garden.
The kitchen’s 3m-long island bench is a very considered
choice. It includes plenty of space for food prep, while also

plenty of storage, and a natural colour palette.
To meet this brief, the kitchen was kept clean and
modern from the get-go. Large-format porcelain was
chosen for the benchtops and splashback, providing a
robust and stylish feature. Warm timber was selected for
the cabinetry, creating a beautiful contrast to the dramatic

All original cabinets, ȵooring and plaster had to be removed
because of water damage, essentially leaving them with a
blank canvas to bring their dream kitchen to life. With the
help of Julia from Direct Kitchens, that’s exactly what they did.
As the room is bathed in natural light for many hours of
the day thanks to its large windows, the design team opted
for a Hamptons-style kitchen that heavily features stunning
indigo blue hues. The team thought outside the box to
facilitate a large island with a breakfast bar perfect for casual
meals and long chats while preparing dinners. Caesarstone
in Aterra Blanca was selected for the benchtops and nearby
splashbacks. It juxtaposes the darker cabinetry perfectly
while its subtle veining complements the room’s darker
shades beautifully. This contrast of colours and textures
has succeeded in adding a touch of luxe to this space to
the delight of the homeowners.
The dwelling’s original kitchen was lacking in storage,
so this was rectiȴed during the rebuild. It includes Blum
kickplate drawers and pull-out drawers to the tall cabinetry.
Other accessories, such as pull-out storage units on
either side of the cooktop and door-pull twin bins, add
to the kitchen’s workability, with everything now at the
homeowners’ ȴngertips.
Some technical structural work, including closing o΍
a doorway, constructing a nib wall and removing part of
a wall, was planned and executed with skill to enable the
construction of a much-desired butler’s pantry. Extra
storage solutions were custom-built for this area to ensure

When the homeowners decided to renovate this home’s

original stock standard, 2000s vinyl kitchen, complete with wall
in the middle of the room holding up the ceiling, they decided
to dream big. One of the owners is a chef, so a kitchen worthy
of culinary excellence was what this home needed.
The homeowners’ brief to Select Kitchen & Bathrooms
stipulated a unique, luxurious yet eccentric space with
high-end ȴnishes and appliances. This plan presented some
structural challenges as the team ȴrst needed to remove a
small 1.2m wall and replace it with a 6m steel beam. Once
this was carefully completed, the team began to bring their
grand plans for the room to life.
To meet the brief, a semi-open pantry was worked in
behind the island. While its blue cabinetry and eclectic
ladder command attention when the doors are open, the
homeowners can shut the pantry doors when they prefer
the space to look elegant and sophisticated.
A luxe veined surface was chosen for the curved split-level
island, with a cooking zone complete with a teppanyaki plate,
Gaggenau grill, wok burner and induction cooktop worked in
to help facilitate the homeowners’ frequent dinner parties.
The island is the kitchen’s hub, the perfect place for their
guests to be entertained and fed.

This kitchen was designed as part of a renovation. The

new design combined the dark-timber chopping block and
chairs with the soft timber ȵoors and the white cabinetry
to create a harmonious yet striking appearance.
The natural light that pours in from the large windows
in the living area, combined with the kitchen skylight,
allows the materials to really shine. An LED strip light
rebated into the underside of the upper cabinets
allows extra benchtop light. The space is ergonomic
with separate cooking, preparation and washing zones,
minimising the traɝc throughout the space. The fronts
have been custom-made to have 20mm stiles and rails
instead of the standard 70mm, while the cabinet internals
were made dark instead of the standard white. There is an
exceptional amount of storage space in the base cabinets,
through to the tall cabinets and on to the two sets of
upper cabinets, which go straight up to the ceiling.

DESIGN RESPONSE

objective
The homeowners of the renovation
project wished for a large, open-plan
space that would provide functional
cooking zones alongside areas to
entertain family and friends

solution
A functional work layout was created
at one end of the kitchen, leaving the
opposite end clear for entertaining
guests without traffic intersection.
The use of timber on the work end of
the bench versus stone on the other
end further emphasises this divide

This also creates a seamless ȵoor-to-ceiling balance.

There’s a hidden TV behind an upper cabinet to meet
the clients’ request for easy entertaining.
The extra-long benchtop, custom-made chopping
block, and TV all work together to create the ultimate
entertaining space. The large custom-made chopping
board in the island allows for easy entertaining and
provides a very unique look you don’t see every day.

When asked what they wanted for their new kitchen, the
homeowners’ brief was for a clean, seamless space with
a wall of cupboards to help hide away all clutter. With this
in mind, the team at Elegant in Design began their task of
renovating the room.
The cabinet doors and panels in ForestOne’s EGGER
Fjord Green are without a doubt the standout feature. Not
only do they provide a stunning pop of colour, they also add
character and depth to the space while creating beautiful
contrast to the room’s other monochrome elements.
Sink and stove alcoves on adjacent walls wrapped in
stone also add to the kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic
appeal. The overhead cabinets above the sink are black
glass inserts, which balance the black wine fridge and black
oven and cooktop on either side.
These design elements facilitated the decision to omit
the island linear pendant, allowing an unobstructed view
of the kitchen from the living room. Stools with low-height
backrests were also selected for the same reason.
The end result is a kitchen the homeowners are thrilled
to use every day and will likely cherish for years to come.

Though home-cooking has some wonderful
beneȴts, there can be one major downside
to cooking large family meals at home if your
rangehood isn’t up to scratch. That’s right – the
odours, with some ingredients and cuisines
capable of permeating your entire home.
Thankfully, Qasair rangehoods can help you
overcome this problem and more.
Qasair rangehoods are designed speciȴcally
to remove the four by-products of cooking –
heat, steam, grease and odours. When you
choose a Qasair rangehood, you can rest
assured knowing it will remove these by-
products through its unequalled performance
with high air movement – with the added
bonus of being quieter than many other similar
products on the market too. Gone are the
days of struggling to hold a conversation while
the rangehood is on – this rangehood is very
conducive to family bonding sessions while
cooking meals each night.
Wholly Australian-owned and made locally in
Ringwood, Qasair rangehoods can manufacture
bespoke rangehoods to meet your unique
design requirements.
With premium quality, ȵexibility of design
and exceptional performance, Qasair
rangehoods are perfect for those who are
craving a quiet, clean, odour-free kitchen.

How did you discover Dezign Kitchens and

what made you choose them?
We were familiar with the area and knew there
were quite a few kitchen design companies in
Willoughby. We went to each of them to have a
look at their showrooms and Dezign Kitchen’s
made by far the most impact and aligned with
what we were looking for. Very contemporary,
stylish and high quality. We only renovate
once every 20 years, so the budget was not
the primary driver.

What was the design process and how did

you feel going through it?
Our space is quite challenging; overall it is
relatively small and has a U-shaped main
kitchen and a smallish pantry with a very high
ceiling. There are also a number of windows
in the kitchen that dictate where cabinetry
can go. My wife didn’t want any tall cabinets in
the main kitchen, so the designer from Dezign
Kitchens was able to come up with a scheme
that met all our criteria to give us a very
functional and stylish kitchen. Dezign Kitchens
created very detailed CAD drawings of the
design, which meant we knew what we were
getting and were able to iterate a few times to
ȴne tune the end result.

How long was the build process and how

did you cope during this period?
The build process needed to ȴt into laying the
new kitchen parquetry ȵoor, which was done
by a separate company, and turned out to be
quite smooth. We also used painters we were
familiar with. All the trades were fantastic!
Very professional, friendly and excellent turned out really nicely and we bought a
