1.

Simplify each of the following:

g. d − (2d + 1)

Solution:

1. When you see parentheses, the first thing is to remove them, but remember to
distribute the minus sign to everything inside the parentheses.

d − (2d + 1) = d −2d − 1

2. Combine like terms. d − 2d= − d, so:

−d–1

Answer: − d −1

h. 2d + (d − 5)

Solution:

1. Remove parentheses. Since there’s a plus sign, you don’t need to change
anything inside the parentheses.

2d + d −5

2. Combine like terms. 2d + d = 3d, so:

3d − 5

Answer: 3d – 5

f. 3x − (x + 3)

Solution:

1. Remove parentheses. Distribute the minus sign to everything inside:

3x − x − 3

2. Combine like terms. 3x – x = 2x, so:

2x − 3

Answer: 2x − 3

2. Evaluate each of the following when x = 4x, y = 2, z = 3:

a. 3x + (2z − y)

Solution:

1. Plug the values of x, y, and z into the equation:

3(4) + (2(3) − 2)

2. Do the multiplication first:

12 + (6 − 2)

3. Simplify inside the parentheses:

12 + 4 = 16

Answer: 16

b. 6z − (3y − x)

Solution:

1. Plug the values of x, y, and z into the equation:

6(3) − (3(2) − 4)

2. Do the multiplication first:

18 − (6 − 4)
3. Simplify inside the parentheses:

18 – 2 = 16

Answer: 16
