BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Audio visual communication is an effective mode of communication. Sound helps you to enhance
contact by intensifying the audience's knowledge of their sight and hearing. The presenter may use audio
visual to engage the audience, provide more detail, reinforce key points, highlight what is being said, explain
points, and build excitement. Presenters that use audio visual create audiences who are better prepared to
apply event knowledge in real-life environments, and they are more convincing than those that do not.

Importing audio in Adobe Premiere Pro

1. Navigate to your audio file by double-clicking the Project panel.

2. Select the desired music or audio from the folder where the audio is stored.

3. Add the audio to your sequence

The audio file you just imported will be selected. Double-click to open it in the Source panel; notice the waveform.
You can play the audio file here if you would like to listen thereto. Drag the audio clip to the sequence within the
Timeline panel. You can drop it on any audio track below the video tracks.
Adjust the audio track volume
Press the spacebar to play the sequence within the Program panel (upper right panel). Pressing the spacebar
again stops playback. Drag the blue playhead to wherever you want playback to start.
If your audio clip is too loud or too soft compared to the rest of your sequence, you can change the volume of
each audio track independently.
 Choose Window > Audio Track Mixer > [sequence name] to reveal the track mixer for your
sequence.

The playback controls at the bottom of the Audio Track Mixer panel allow you to play, stop, and even loop
sequence playback. As your sequence plays or loops, move the sliders up and down to increase or decrease the volume
of each individual audio track in your sequence. Slide the Master control to adjust the overall audio level.
Note: While sliding the controls, try to keep the audio levels in the –6 to –3 dB range to be level with most
audio projects.

You can also adjust the volume by clicking on the effects control and adjust the level.
Applying Different Audio Effects
1. Audio Swells
These are great transition sound effects that allow you to build emotion, tension, or surprise from one
scene to the other. You can use music or sound effects to create audio swells.

 After dragging the audio clip into the timeline, you will complete an important step : reversing the sound in
Premiere Pro.
 Right click on the clip and select “Speed/Duration.”
 From the new window, hit “Reverse” and then press Ok.
Play it back so you can hear the tension. To create more atmosphere, you can add some music and other sound
effects, as well as make the sound more ominous by using Pitch Shifter which can be found by searching “Pitch
Shifter” in the Effects panel to manipulate the sound.

2. Ring Out Effect

The ring out effect can be applied to music, dialogue, or sound effects. Adding a reverb ring out to music can be
used to end a song sooner to match an edit and to add some drama to it.
To get this effect, click the effects and choose surround Reverb then drag it to the timeline you need to isolate the
desired audio clip where you want the ring out to occur, then extend as needed.
3. Pitch Shifting
The art of altering select voice within an audio clip in order to produce a higher or lower pitch of voice.
Select and isolate the desired area of audio with your razor tool and search “Pitch Shifter” in the Effects Panel.
Apply this effect to the clip and then go to Effect Controls to manipulate the Pitch further with a preset (Select the
“Edit” button from Effect Controls) or by adjust the existing settings.

4. Whoosh Transition Sound Effect

Utilizing a sound effect that is aligned with a cut can provide an excellent transition. To execute the perfect
“whoosh” transition effect, download a “whoosh” sound effect file such as Epidemic Sound and then import the sound
clip into your project. Drag the sound clip into your sequence and align it with the cut to achieve desired effect.
5. Underwater Muffled Sound Effect
The effect of sound under water can be achieved by altering sound when scene is above and below water. To
achieve this, apply a lowpass filter that can be found in the Effects Panel.

Next you would create keyframes at desired points above and below water while adjusting the cut off to allow
for more or less distortion. You would want a lower cut off underwater, and a higher cut off above water. As a result,
you would achieve an Underwater muffled sound effect.

6. Device Audio Effect (Sound from the TV, Radio or Intercom)

This effect is an effortless way to edit sound as if it is coming from different devices. You can choose from
many types of devices and then modify to your liking. Go over to the Effects Panel and scroll down to Essential
Sound. Within the Dialogue, Music, & Sound Effect Drop down menu, you can explore presets and then manipulate
your sound. For example, if you click on Dialogue, you can choose “From TV” or “From Radio” and then adjust from
there to manipulate your device sound.
