**Webinar Script: Producing Learning Resources Using Technology Tools (Characteristics of

Appropriate Instructional Materials in Language Teaching)**

---

**Host:** Good morning, everyone, and welcome to today's webinar on "Producing Learning
Resources Using Technology Tools: Characteristics of Appropriate Instructional Materials in
Language Teaching." I'm thrilled to have you all here today as we delve into the exciting realm of
computer-based instructional tools and materials in language teaching.

Let's start by exploring the concept of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). As many of
you may know, CALL plays a pivotal role in modern language education, offering students
opportunities to exchange ideas and information at both national and international levels. It promotes
learner autonomy, creativity, productivity, and teamwork, as highlighted by Eslit (2017) and Lohdi
(2019).

Incorporating CALL into our teaching practices allows for seamless integration of technology and
language learning, as evidenced by Abate's (2018) research on blending Content and Language
Integrated Learning (CLIL) with CALL. By leveraging simple yet effective web tools, learners'
competencies can be significantly enhanced, enabling improved communication, access to
knowledge, and exposure to using a foreign language.

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) refers to the use of technology to enhance the
teaching and learning of a foreign language. It involves the integration of computer programs,
software, and online resources into language learning activities.

CALL offers various advantages for language learners. Firstly, it provides learners with interactive
and engaging activities that can improve their language skills. For example, language learning
software often includes exercises for vocabulary practice, grammar drills, and pronunciation
exercises.

Secondly, CALL allows learners to access authentic language materials and resources from around
the world. Through online platforms, learners can access news articles, videos, podcasts, and other
authentic materials to improve their listening, reading, and comprehension skills.

Furthermore, CALL provides learners with opportunities for autonomous learning. Learners can
choose their own pace, select topics of interest, and receive immediate feedback on their
performance. This flexibility promotes self-directed learning and empowers learners to take control of
their language learning journey.

In recent years, mobile applications have become popular tools for language learning. Many
language learning apps offer personalized learning experiences, adaptive exercises, and gamified
features to make language learning more enjoyable and effective.
Overall, computer assisted language learning has revolutionized the way languages are taught and
learned. It has expanded access to language learning resources, provided personalized learning
experiences, and enhanced the effectiveness of language learning methods.

So, I have a question here, what is the importance of computer in language teaching?

Okay, thankyou.

However, it's essential to consider the potential challenges posed by online machine translation, as
highlighted by Paul Lyddon (2018). While it facilitates communication between individuals with
limited knowledge of foreign languages, it can also disrupt traditional language education methods.
Therefore, striking a balance between leveraging technology and preserving the integrity of
language learning is paramount.

Moving on to language instructional materials supported by technology tools, Ajoke (2017) identifies
various types of materials beneficial for teaching English as a second language, which can be
equally useful for teaching other languages.

So, before we proceed I want to ask a question.

Can you elaborate on the various types of language instructional materials supported by technology
tools as identified by Ajoke?

Okay thank you.

Let's explore some examples:

1. **Instructional Charts:** These can be presented in enhanced 3D or 4D forms with the aid of
technology. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various chart maker apps offer versatile options
for creating visually appealing charts that facilitate language learning beyond text writing.

2. **Posters:** With the advent of tutorial videos and poster maker applications like Adobe Spark,
Canva, and PosterMyWall, students can develop creative and digitalized posters, fostering their
expression of ideas through pictorial devices.

3. **Flashcards:** Indispensable in language teaching, flashcards can be prepared using apps like
Anki, Vocabla, Learn Spanish with EduKoala, and Study Blue, offering interactive and engaging
learning experiences for students.

4. **Slide Presentations:** Microsoft PowerPoint, PowToon, Google Drive Presentation, Slide

Rocket, and Prezi offer dynamic options for creating visually compelling presentations that enhance
language instruction.
5. **Worksheets and Forms:** Google Forms, Survey Planet, and other online survey tools provide
versatile options for creating electronic forms, accommodating differentiated instruction and
promoting active learning.

6. **Newsletters:** Newsletters serve as valuable materials for language teaching and learning,
fostering collaboration, creativity, and language skills development among students. Tools like
Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Spark facilitate the creation of engaging newsletters that cater to
diverse learner needs.

7. **Pamphlets and Brochures:** Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Spark, and other design tools enable
the development of informative pamphlets and brochures, enhancing language instruction through
visually appealing materials.

Now, let's discuss the characteristics of appropriate instructional materials in language teaching
supported by technology tools. These materials should:

- Promote active learning

- Develop critical thinking skills
- Accommodate differentiated instruction
- Be motivating
- Be multisensory

Moreover, incorporating the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is essential to ensure
accessibility and inclusion for all students. The principles outlined by the National Disability Authority
and the Center for Academic and Faculty Development emphasize equitable use, flexibility,
simplicity, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for
approach and use.

By embracing these principles and leveraging technology tools effectively, educators can create
instructional materials that engage students, foster language acquisition, and promote inclusive
learning environments.

Now, I'd like to open the floor for questions and discussions. Please feel free to share your thoughts,
experiences, and insights on producing learning resources using technology tools in language
teaching. Let's engage in a collaborative dialogue to further enhance our teaching practices.
