LESSON: SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

Scope and delimitation are two elements of a research paper. The scope of a study tells what is and what is not
in the domain of your research. You have to be specific as to what you will be studying and what factors are within the
accepted range of your study. It explains the extent to which the research area will be explored in the work and specifies
the parameters within which your study will be operating. For example, let's say you want to study the impact of mobile
phones on behavior patterns of elementary school children. However, you can’t cover every aspect of the topic. The
scope will have to be narrowed down to a certain section of the target population. In this case, you might have
narrowed down the scope to a group of 40 children in grades 3-4 of one specific school. Their behavior patterns in
school may have been observed for 3 months. These would form the delimitations of the study.

Thus, delimitations are the characteristics that limit the scope and describe the boundaries of the study, such as
the sample size, geographical location, or setting in which the study takes place, population traits, etc. Additionally, you
might choose to use some research tools and methodologies to collect data but not others. These delimitations might be
imposed for practical reasons; such as lack of time or financial resources to carry out a more thorough investigation. The
delimitation section of the study should explain why specific choices were made while others were excluded and how
this might affect the outcome of the research.

In the example mentioned above, you might state why you chose to study a sample population of 40 students,
why you selected students from Grades 3-4 and not grades 1-2, and why you chose students of Caniogan Elementary
Public School over other schools.

Delimitation vs Limitation
These concepts are confusing because both limitations and delimitations restrict (or limit) the questions you’ll
be able to answer with your study. However, the biggest difference between limitations and delimitations is the degree
of control you have over them—that is, how much they are based on conscious, intentional choices you made in
designing your study.

Limitations are influences that the researcher cannot control. Limitations are related to qualitative research in
terms of validity and reliability. They are the shortcomings, conditions, or influences that cannot be controlled by the
researcher that place restrictions on the methodology and conclusions. Any limitations that might influence the results
should be mentioned.

Usual Limitations of the study

• The issues with sample and selection
• The insufficient sample size for statistical treatment
• Lack of previous research studies on the topic
• Methods, an instrument to collect the data

Delimitations refer to the boundaries of the research study, arising from the researcher’s decisions of what to
exclude. They describe the boundaries that the researcher has set for the study.
Tips in Writing Scope and Delimitations
Indicate the principal variables, size, locale, time frame, and justification.
• To whom your research is directed to?
• What is the size of the population?
• What is the subject matter of the study?
• Where will the study take place?
• What is the time frame? (Indicate the time coverage of the study)
• Don’t forget the limitation. What is the limitation of your study?
Steps to Follow in Writing Scope and Delimitation

Step 1: Refer to the research problem and objective.

Step 2: Provide details to the following information.
General purpose: To determine the status of teaching Practical Research 1
Subject matter: The Teaching of Practical Research 1
Topic (aspect) studied: Qualification of teachers, their methods and Strategies, facilities, forms of supervisory
assistance, problem, and propose a solution to the problem
Population or participants: Practical Research Teachers of Rizal High School and grade 11 HUMSS students
Location of the study: Rizal High School
Duration of the study: 6 months
Step 3: Generate a paragraph using those details.

Example of Scope and Delimitation

The study was conducted to determine the status of teaching Practical Research1 as perceived by the teachers and 200
students of grade 11 HUMSS in Rizal High School within the first quarter of the school year 2019-2020. The aspect
looked into were qualifications of teachers, their methods and strategies, facilities, forms of supervisory assistance,
problem, and propose a solution to the problem. This study was limited to 200 participants of Grade 11 HUMSS only.
The other students from other tracks were not included as well as the teachers teaching other subjects than Practical
Research 1.
