WAYS OF GIVING
EXPANDED
DEFINITION
EXPANDING BY GIVING EXAMPLE

example, for instance, such as, similar
to, specifically, to illustrate, much like,
and the same ways.
Example:
Love can refer to the bond between family members, the care
shared between friends, or even the passion one feels for a
hobby or cause. It manifests in various forms, such as
affection, which is a gentle and caring attachment; adoration,
a more intense form of love that is often tied to admiration and
respect; and compassion, where love is expressed through
empathy and a desire to alleviate the suffering of others.
EXPANDING BY COMPARING AND
CONTRASTING
A pattern that shows how the word differ or
similar from others in the same class.

Signal words: also, although, as well as, better,

bigger than, but, compared with, different
from, either, however, on the other hand,
similar to, while, and yet.
Example:
Love is a deep feeling that comes in many forms. Romantic
love is about closeness, attraction, and sharing special
moments with a partner. It's often marked by passion and a
strong bond. Platonic love, on the other hand, is the affection
we feel for friends, family, and even pets. It's about caring,
respect, and supporting each other without any romantic
feelings.
EXPANDING BY DESCRIBING A
PROCESS
A pattern that explains a concept step by step,
showing how it works or develops over time. This
method breaks down an idea into smaller stages
making it easier to understand.

Signal words: before, during, finally, first, lastly,

since, and immediately.
Example:

academic material to prepare for exams, complete assignments, and
