Airport as an operational system

Let’s break down the operational systems of an airport into its main components: landside,
terminal side, and airside.

1. Landside:

Roadways and Parking:This includes the road network leading to the airport, parking
facilities for passengers and employees, and drop-off and pick-up areas.

Public Transportation: Integration with bus, train, or other public transportation systems
for passengers to access the airport.

Check-in and Baggage Drop:Facilities for passengers to check in for their flights, drop off
luggage, and obtain boarding passes.

Terminal Access: Entrances, ticketing counters, security checkpoints, and

immigration/customs facilities for passengers entering the terminal.

2. Terminal Side:

Departure Lounge:Waiting areas, shops, restaurants, and other amenities for departing
passengers.
Gates and Boarding Areas: Gates for boarding flights, typically equipped with seating,
information displays, and boarding announcements.

- Security Screening: checkpoints for passengers and their belongings before entering
the secure area of the terminal.

Baggage Claim:Facilities for passengers to retrieve their checked luggage upon arrival.

Arrival Hall: Facilities for incoming passengers, including customs and immigration
checkpoints, baggage claim, and ground transportation options.
Airside:

Runways and Taxiways: The infrastructure for aircraft takeoffs, landings, and movement
on the ground.

Apron: The area where aircraft are parked, loaded, unloaded, and refuelled.

Air Traffic Control Tower:The control centre responsible for managing aircraft movement
in and around the airport

Aircraft Parking Stands: Designated parking areas for aircraft at the gates.

Fuelling Facilities: Infrastructure for fuelling aircraft.

Maintenance Facilities: Facilities for aircraft maintenance and repairs.

Each of these components is essential for the smooth operation of an airport, ensuring the
efficient flow of passengers, baggage, and aircraft from landside to airside and vice versa.
