Q2. Read the passage given below and very briefly the questions that follow:
1 For a large part of my career, I had no sponsors. I have even, on occasion, paid for my travel to participate in
Competitions and camps. Today there is a marked improvement in facilities for other sports. I run the M. C.
Mary Kom Boxing Academy absolutely free of charge. It focuses on underprivileged children. My own
Experiences have taught me how difficult it is to follow one’s dreams without any support or resources.
2 When we began, we had no proper infrastructure or even a boxing ring. All I was armed with was talent,
experience and the support of my husband. I was happy to teach children, but managing an institution seemed
like too much trouble. Although I did not possess a coaching diploma, I felt that my years of training and
experience would suffice to teach students the basics of boxing.
3 So, in addition to the students whose parents brought them to me, I scouted for youngsters from poor families
Who appeared to have potential. Some of my boys and girls are as young as ten, but most are in their teens. The
Expenses- food, lodging an extra coach, a warden for the students-came from my pocket. Most months, it has
my entire pay packet.
4 My efforts paid off when my first student, Nengneihat, began to win medals. In 2008, she won gold at the All
India Inter-SAI followed by silver the next year. At the national level, she managed to get a silver and bronze
and at the state level, she won two golds.
5 Only after my students started getting medals did the Academy come to be recognized. Slowly things are
falling in to place. The army- which has a very lively culture of boxing- has been actively supporting my
academy with
donations of a generator, boxing gear, gymnasium and even kitchen equipment.
Answer the following questions.
a. What was the main focus of the academy run by Mary Kom?

Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow.
That’s why I still don’t like school events that include parents. I don’t hate them as much as I did at the
beginning of the school year. Like the Thanksgiving Sharing Festival: that was the worst one, I think. That was
the first time I had to face the parents all at once. The Egyptian Sharing came after that, but that one was okay
because I got to dress up as a mummy and nobody noticed me. Then came the winter concert, which I totally
hated because I had to sing in the chorus. Not only can I not sing at all, but it felt I was on display. The New
Year Art show wasn’t quite as bad, but it was still annoying. They put up our Artwork in the hallways all over
the school and had the parents come and check it out. It was like starting school all over again.
a. Why did Auggie hate school events?
b. Why did Auggie find Egyptian Sharing better than the Thanksgiving Sharing Festival?
c. Pick up a word from the extract which means the same as ‘corridor’.
d. Pick up a word from the extract which means the opposite of ‘pleasant’.
