D222 - Non-Standard Rigging Checklist

The Non-Standard Rigging Checklist outlines procedures for safely using non-standard lifting equipment in situations where traditional cranes are unavailable. It includes planning, preparation, execution, and review steps to ensure safety and compliance, such as verifying load weights, inspecting equipment, and ensuring communication among personnel. The checklist emphasizes the importance of training, risk assessment, and proper documentation throughout the rigging process.

Non-Standard Rigging Checklist L-2 D-222

Non-Standard Rigging includes the following:

• Use of lifting or pulling equipment that is not "fixed to rig" in areas where cranes or lifting equipment are not available
• Use of chain falls, come-a-longs, beam clamps, snatch blocks, etc.; typically required for non-routine tasks
• Involves movement or repair of heavy equipment or materials
Check Points Initial
PLANNING
Identify whether the activity can be completed without the use of any non-standard equipment
Assign responsible party for the non-standard rigging activity. Responsible party should be trained on
rigging and lifting including calculating safe working limits, determining the load's center of gravity, etc.
Request PTW
Verify the load weight
Identify if the activity has been successfully performed in the past and use learnings for this activity
Verify all equipment comes from a managed storage location and is visually inspected for damage
Verify all lifting equipment is within current inspection i.e. color code or certification tag is current
Verify the NSR equipment and tie-off points are rated for 110% of the load (to include load Safety Factor)
Verify the line of fire areas are identified. Install appropriate barriers.
Make sure JSA includes escape routes, secondary restraints and use of "hands-off" tools
PREPARATION
Verify PTW is complete and review JSA with all personnel involved in the activity
Verify load is slung correctly and is stable
Verify the Safe Working Limit of all the lifting equipment is 10% greater than the load (to include load Safety
Factor)
Verify there are no twists or knots in the slings or lever hoist chains
Verify that personnel involved in the lift are ready and outside line of fire areas
Test emergency stop for power driven equipment (if applicable)
Confirm communication, radio operation and hand signals are all working as planned
Verify supervisor is onsite during the entire activity but not engaged in task
Simulate lift where possible and replan lift if necessary
Verify the lift does not create additional hazards
EXECUTION
When in use, the chain block shall not be hoisted or lowered to the extremes of the chain limits; this
prevents the hook/chain from getting stuck in the chain / lever hoist housing
Monitor conditions and verify equipment remains in good working condition
Stop if any portion of the activity does not work as anticipated; replan lift, update JSA / PTW as needed
REVIEW
Remove barriers and inspect site (housekeeping)
Visually inspect lifting equipment for damage and return to storage location if good
Mark non-compliant equipment and isolate to prevent use until repaired or replaced
Close out all control documents appropriately
