Oral Presentation

The document discusses the evolution and implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting its origins from early neural network models to the term coined by John McCarthy in 1956. It outlines the advantages of AI, such as increased efficiency and productivity, alongside disadvantages like job displacement and the risk of over-dependence. The conclusion emphasizes the need for careful integration of AI into society to prevent potential threats to humanity.

Oral Presentation: A.

Artificial Intelligence better known as AI has revolutioned our entire world,

especially in the last two decades. However, it’s far from being consensual and
it’s becoming more and more controversial. Let’s try to understand why.

In 1943, the American neurophychologist and the logician Walter Pitts proposed
the first mathematical modelo f a neural network. I tis considered to be “the first
artificial intelligence”
In 1950, the british mathmatician Alan Turing created the “Turing Machine”, which
can be considered a model of a general – purpose computer.
In 1956, the scientist John McCarthy coined the term “AI” and became the father
of Artificial Intelligence.

- But Bruna, do we really know what was AI originally created for?

- Well Carolina, AI ia a field of research, aimed to find how to make machines use
language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved
for humans and improve themselves.
So, in short terms, it is the ability of machines to learn and perform tasks that
previously required human intelligence. AI uses algorithms and large volumes of
data to simulate human intellect.

AI has numeous advantages, such as:

• The increasing of efficienty and productivity: AI-powered software can
automate repetitive jobs, allowing employees to focus on more complex
and creative work;
• Higher productivit, better precision, less human error and reduced costs;
• The optimisation of resources and the ability to analyse large amounts of
data in various sectors including medicine, industry and security;
• Ability to perform tasks that are too dangerous or difficult for humans.

Nevertheless, there are some disadvantages that we can point out:

• Job dislocation and unemplotment, since machines can easily replace
humans.
• The excessive dependence on AI can reduce the human capacity to think
critically and solve problems;
• The risk of having our data hacked and our accounts hacked;
• Lack of emotion and creativity, as well as laziness can be catastrophic for
humankind.

In conclusion, AI can be a useful tool and open up news opportunities for work
and creativity, but it will became a real threat to us if we rely too much on it and
let it take controlo f our lives.
Quoting Stephen Hawking: “Computer will overtake humans with AI within the
next 100 years. When that happens, we need to make sure the computers have
goals aligned with ours.”

Now we just want to show a video that we asked AI to made showing two
contrasting realities: one in which humans live in a world like the current one, and
another in which artificial intelligence dominates the world and the human race
becomes extinct.
