A notice is written or printed information that can be in the form of an official statement of public
importance, advance warning or notification. It can also be used for giving information to a segment of
people or people at large.

The basic purpose of a notice is to disseminate information related to various issues or occasions. It is
written in simple and formal language and is always brief and to the point. Notices are generally

Sir

Subject: Frequent road accidents due to rash driving

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I wish to draw your attention towards the increasing
number of road accidents.

The survey report by your newspaper shows that the craze for speed, especially among the young
generation, is responsible for the increasing number of deaths in road accidents. The caution boards like
‘Speed Thrills but Kills’ and ‘Better Late than Never’ are unable to diminish the fascination for speed
among youth. They lack a sense of responsibility and discipline which are mandatory for a driver. In
such accidents many lose their lives adding woes to their family. There is an added danger to the
pedestrians and other drivers. It is essential for parents to be vigilant and restrain their children from
driving if they are underage. The police should strictly implement traffic rules. Heavy fines must be
imposed on the defaulters in cases such as driving without a license, being underage, over-speeding,

15
riding without a helmet etc. It is the responsibility of the family, society and authorities to join hands to
curb the situation.

I hope my letter would get enough space in your newspaper so that the concerned authorities and other
stakeholders are made aware of the issue. I do believe that the menace of rash driving can be diminished
with vigilance and discipline.

Yours truly
Neeraj

Importance of Newspapers in Modern Life

-by Bhawna

A newspaper has been defined as any printed mail that contains news for the public. Every newspaper
tries to establish its identity and win the loyalty of its readers through the presentation of its material in
the shape of stories, cartoons, pictures and words.

It is through the newspapers, the policies and actions of the government are conveyed to the people and
in turn people give opinion or criticise them. In this way, newspapers form a chain of actions and
reactions. In a democracy, the role of press is of great importance as it makes the public aware about
important political issues. They play a positive and constructive role. The newspapers have a noble
mission of enlightening people, broadening their views and discouraging communal trends. The
newspaper can make and break governments. However, certain newspapers indulge in sub-standard
journalism and exploit vulnerable readers. In reality, the newspaper is the watchdog of human rights,
whom we call the fourth pillar in the age of democracy. It is the pioneer of the underdog and the
downtrodden.

It is one of the strongest building blocks of a free nation. If we analyse the word 'news' we get N.E.W.
and S. Here 'N' stands for the North, 'E' stands for the East, 'W' stands for the West and 'S' stands for the
south. In this way, the newspaper covers all the important events and the incidents happening around the
four directions of the world.

Fire in Frontier Mail Claims 42 Lives

-by Harpreet K. Dang

little did he know that he would be never make it to his destination along with more than 40 others as
27
they died in a bizarre fire accident on board the Amritsar bound Frontier Mail (Golden Temple Express)
near Laddowal Railway Station.

According to preliminary reports and eye-witness accounts, the fire started with the bursting of a stove
in the S-5 coach of the train and soon it spread to two other coaches. By the time emergency brakes
brought the train to a screaming halt, the raging inferno had claimed more than 40 lives, all victims of
burns, suffocation, trauma and trampling. Local villagers, railway men and fire tenders from Ludhiana,
Phillaur, Phagwara and Jalandhar were busy bringing the fire under control. Meanwhile, more than 250
injured men, women and children were admitted to DMC and CMC, Ludhiana. An enquiry counter with
phone number 0161-2222222 has been established at Ludhiana Railway Station. Mr. C.K. Hasija, the
Divisional Commissioner, Railway Safety said that an enquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of
the fire. The next of kin of the dead will be given Rs. One Lakh each as compensation while each
injured person will get Rs. 10,000, he said. 10 women and 5 children are among those dead. More
details were awaited when the report was filed.
