Internal Examination
[Total: 50 marks]

Instructions:
Students are required to attempt ALL questions.
Students are required to show all working.
Student’s name and ID number must be inserted at the top right hand corner of each sheet of paper.
Students must return both the exam script and solutions.
Students are also required to hand in all scrap paper.

Duration: One (1) hour and thirty (30) minutes.


This exam contains four (4) questions.

1. (a) In a particularly economy, the equilibrium prices in the corn and wheat markets are given
by the following equations:
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 29
𝑦−𝑥 =3
where x and y are the prices of corn and wheat respectively. Solve these equations
simultaneously, and state the set of prices which will allow these markets to be in equilibrium.
[6 marks]

(b) (i) Verify that (x + 3) is a factor of the function f(x) = 𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 6 [2 marks]


(ii) Hence solve the equation:
𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 𝑥 = 6 [5 marks]

2. (a) Given 𝑓(𝑥) = , find 𝑓 −1 (𝑥). [4 marks]

(b) Solve the following system of linear inequalities and show your solution graphically:

4. Solve the following equations:


(a) 7𝑥(2𝑥 + 4) − 7(𝑥 − 1) = 14𝑥(𝑥 + 1) [4 marks]
