Introduction
The library department is the pivotal centre of learning and sharing of
knowledge in a College. There is need to develop college library with
acquisition of modern print editions of books, journals, research papers,

magazines and examination materials. The modernization of College library
can generate more avenues for students enrolled in the college and can get
acquainted with latest teaching learning material.
About Institution
Govt. Degree College Sopore was established on 27th of
September 1951. Initially the college started as an intermediate college
in 1949 and was housed in the present Govt. Boys Higher Secondary
Sopore. It was only in 1951 that it was shifted in the present building and
since then thousands of students have left the college and attained
eminent positions in the social mainstream. Starting with a meager roll of
50 odd students in 1951, the institution has presently 3532 students on
its roll with around 900 girl students alone. Sprawling over 111.3 kanals
of land with built up area of around 7000 Sq. meter, the college campus
is centrally located in the Sopore Town. Being multi-faculty and multi-
disciplinary co-educational institution, the students pursue various under-
graduate courses in Humanities, Science, Commerce & Management.
The college has teaching faculty strength of 46 regular faculty members
including a Professor, Associate Professors, Sr. Assistant Professors & a
sizable number of (72) teaching members working on academic
arrangement basis.
The campus has 32 lecture rooms, one spacious seminar hall/
conference hall, a State-of-Art auditorium block and Green House, one
Browsing Centre, 20 Science labs, 70 computers with broadband
connectivity under (NME Scheme) and a central digitized/automated
library consisting 37000 books, 10 Journals. Besides the college is
connected with a regional beam of EDUSAT and has Satellite Interactive
Terminal (SIT) facility. The college emblem has been coined with a view
to inculcate the traits of an eagle among the learners of this institution
which happens to be an imaginary bird which on wings signifies
ceaseless efforts on part of it to reach the zenith.

1. To upgrade library infrastructure and capacity in terms of books,
journals and access to research and publication work.
2. To opt RFID based technology for book issue and return purposes
along with require software for managing student and faculty issue
accounts.
3. To develop resource centre in Library with access to INFLIBNET
Services and other services like open learning courses and
tutorials.
4. To develop library as student facilitation centre with focus on
learning and knowledge sharing.
Activities to be undertaken:
1. Physical upgradation of Library Deptt. in terms of purchase of
books latest editions for all subjects and streams at least 50 copies
each per subject of study.
2. Installing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) System in College
Library along with required software and hardware for modernising
library functioning.
3. Developing e Resource Centre within the library with access to
renowned journals like Emerald, Sage, Elsevier & UNDP Reports
etc.
